Boyds thumbhole stock and Handi learning curve
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:41:26 PM »
I put the Boyds Thumbhole stock on my main Handi frame today, mounted my 20 gauge Ultra barrel on it and went out back to my 50 yard range. First round fired but the next 6 would not go off. I switched the barrel to my shotgun frame and what do you know all those rounds that wouldn't go off fired. Nice shooting barrel too, it seems to really like the Buckhammers. So I then put the 44 mag barrel on it which came with the frame and it shot just fine except the point of impact was 2 inches low instead of 1 inch high. The Thumbhole stock has a different way of recoiling. I resighted in of course. As to the misfire issue, previously I had no problem getting Brenneke slugs go off, they were also very accurate but aparently the Remington Buckhammers have harder primer cups. This frame has had a trigger job and possibly taking a bit more than a coil of the mainspring brought it out of the realm of hard shotgun primers.

I put the same stock set on my 45/70 and the fore stock was a bit tight which affected the accuracy.  I never had a FTF, and after fitting the fore stock the accuracy returned.  Not sure this is the same that you are experiencing but I thought I'd mention it.

Last year I put a "Monte Carlo" rear stock on my BC.  This was an attempt to absorb recoil and have some continuity with my other Handi.  It didn't work  :-[, the gun shot 16"s high at 100 yards.  After I posted the problem a savy member posted that the relation of my face to the sight had changed and so the sight picture was off.  I replaced the old stock and it was right back to its old self.

The difference in stocks may contribute to the change in accuracy, but I'm not sure why it would cause misfires.

The stock had nothing to do with the misfires. The Remington Buckhammer slugs must have pretty tough primers and my SB2 frame, having a trigger job in which the spring was shortened was not up to hitting the primers of that particular round hard enough. The shotgun or SB1 frame has the standard length spring thus no problems. I have the old forearm which is fitted to the 44 mag barrel and there are no issues there. With the thumbhole stock shooting was a bit different. I could not lay my hand on the rest and the foreend on my hand as it would recoil downward and pinch the bottom of my hand against the rest.

I've got a Boyd's thumbhole stock on my 20 gauge slug gun and I drilled out the rear of the stock and placed several ounces of shot epoxied in to add weight to the gun.

I like the balance of my gun now, and when using the thumbhole stock I let my right elbow rest straight down along my side thus letting the entire weight of my arm sort of pull down and at the same time pull into my shoulder, which seems to really absorb the recoil, and I can shoot 3" loads all day and it's mild in felt recoil.

It's my favorite handi!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I had planned on using the thumbhole stock with my slug gun barrel. However when I put my 17.5 inch long 44 mag barrel on it and started shooting it I decided it was going to stay on my most used frame. The shotgun frame I put the slug barrel on has a monte carlo stock with a recoil pad and it works just fine.
