If you are talking pistol then for me because of the weight it is the contender or G2 if you mean rifle then I think that would be a personal preferance. with the contender in rifle format you have to open the action and close to get it to cock so if there is a shot and you cock the hammer and then dont take the shot and let hammer down then you must open action and close before you can cock hammer. you dont have this problem with the G2 or encore and the encore will handle some of the higher preasure cal.If you do a lot of walking then the contender is lighter. The encore weight will help you on felt recoil. I think it all boils down to personal preferance they are all great and will do the job that it was intended for. I have both but for hunting then it is the G2 or Encore.

Absolutely agree with what Deacon said. Summed it up very nicely.

Thanks for the info, Deacon. I owned a contender once but like many others I let it go in a moment of weakness. I would like to have both pistol & rifle and down the road maybe several calibers. Sounds like an Encore might fit my needs the best. Thanks again.

They'll both work pretty well as either but I like the Contender better as a pistol and the Encore better as a rifle. The Encore is a little bulky for a pistol but shoots very well. I don't have a Contender carbine but I like the light weight feel of them. I would love to get a couple carbine barrels in 22lr and 6.5 TCU.

I like the Encore frame better, but my favorite carry rifle is a Contender carbine in .17AH. Personally I don`t see how anyone can live with out haveing both.  ;)

Which do you prefer and what are the main differences?

I like and use both in rifle and pistol form. The Encore has a bigger heavier frame and will handle most any cartridge made(not all). In pistol configuration the trigger is hard to reach for short fingered folks.

The Contender or new model G2 Contender has a smaller lighter frame and will handle only low pressure rounds. The new G2 can be recocked without opening the frame unlike the old style Contender.

Both in my opinion make for a great to carry rifle.

When hunting with a pistol I do prefer the G2 or Contender over the Encore pistol, but do have and hunt with Encore pistols also do to them handling the high pressure rounds.

 Here's my take...
Way back when, prior to the Encore's inseption,I fell in love with the contender..great set up..carbine and handgun worked great...THEN..they came up with a "better mousetrap" the Encore...oohh boy I had to have one.Not being rich,I traded in my entire Contender set up for a bigger and higher powered Encore....BIG MISTAKE...for me anyway..
The Contender just fit me..felt good, well balanced,ect..the Encore did not,I thought I would get used to it,but I did not...sooo... Went to see Ed (Eds contenders) and traded all that Encore stuff for Contender stuff once again...Ahhh  happy camper once again...
I did add a G2 when they came out,and wish I could shoot some bigger cartridges like the Encore but its not worth the trade off for me..I'll stay with my contender stuff..

So will a Contender barrel fit an Encore frame?

I have a contender.  My buddy has an Encore.
He started out with a 308 and it about twisted his wrist off.
I started out with a 223 -14"
Now have a 10" 45 / 410
14" 30-30
14" 44 Mag
16" 223 carbine.  This makes the rifle tiny.  It is about 3/4 the size of my standard 10/22.
and a 10" 30-30 reciently purchased here on the way after christmas.
Scott- ended up selling his 308 and obtaining a 250-3000 Barrel and has killed deer with it.  He also has a 223 barrel but it is a lot heavier than mine.
I guess it depends on what you want to hunt, how you hunt and what caliber you want to use.  I think the Encore would be better is you are looking for more rifle than handgun, or one gun to do everything.  Handgun, rifle, front stuffer, and shotgun.  The encore cna shoot 20 ga and the contender is 410 only.
