Info on 500SW [ popularity]
« on: December 09, 2009, 11:28:08 AM »
First off: I am not soliciting in the general forum, just asking opinions!!!!

I have the chance to buy a New Handi for a really good price.  It was sold by my local shop.  Guy brought it back cause the action popped open on him.  He demanded his money back. NO OTHER OPTION!
The dealer sent it back to NEF and got it 'fixed'.  Now the dealer wants to sell it cheap.  Barrel has been fired maybe a dozen times.
I want the frame and stock, so I am wondering if the 500 is a popular barrel in the classifieds?? {and yes i did do a search on it}
Here in Ms the 500 is legal as a "primitive weapon" barrel, so I may can sell local.
Did the 500 ever really catch on??  I just dont want to buy the complete rifle and be stuck with a barrel I dont have a need for.  I rather LOVE my 45-70 and may send this frame in to have another fitted to it.  2 45-70s is not a bad thing, is it?? ;D

Slufoot seems to like his 500. ;D
I just got a 500 barrel myself and have yet to shoot it. It should make for a very good brush gun.
I think the cost of 500 ammo really hurt it.

I'd buy a 500 barrel at a REALLY good price, but I wouldn't go out and buy one retail.  Many more on the list in front of that one for me.  Ammo is spendy, I would most likely set up to reload for it if I had one to curb the cost a bit.  I too have a 45/70, so I really don't know why I would need a 500 but it does intrigue me enough that I would buy one cheap if the offer was there.

Not as popular as some others, but seems to have a bit of a following on this site...

The 500S&W is somewhat of a novelty as far as I'm concerned, it was never a barrel that I had a hankering for, if I hadn't run on to a great buy on a die set and bullets, I would never have bought the second hand barrel, the 45-70 has it beat hands down ballistically when loaded to the same pressure level, it has my vote for favorite big bore.  ;)

When I find another one I will pick it up, I believe it serves a good purpose, as does the 45-70, and in thick brush it has a lot of power. We debate alot about wanting different/more Large Caliber barrel options, but some seem to down grade the 500....Who here wants to just limit the Handi selection to just 1 big bore  ??? The fact we have a choice between the 2 is awesome! Lets keep it that way right ;)

It's great for stopping the occasional charging dinosaur.  I bought mine for primitive weapon because I couldn't find a 45-70 at the time.

The 444 seems to be the red headed stepchild of the big bore Handi's. I don't think it gets the attention it deserves. Maybe it's just the fact that the 45-70 is so great and the 500 has the shock and awe factor. Even the other big bore pistol cartridge Handi's (44mag, 45LC) seem to be more popular. :-\

I have and like the 444, but it is expensive to get brass for, and there is basically one choice- Remington. The 500 has 5 choices I think. Last time I checked, 444 brass was almost $60 per 100. I have found 500 brass in more places than 444 also. I just ordered a 500 Handi as a gift for a friend in Indiana where it has just become a legal gun to hunt with, it has the 1.625 and under case length. The 45/70 and 444 are both too long. The ammo is astronomical, but a Lee mold, carbide dies, and 50 rounds of brass all can be bought for $75 total, less than 2 boxes of factory ammo at Bass Pro. If his shoots well I will seriously consider getting one also, and look at shooting saboted muzzle loader bullets from it.

Really?  Anyone done this?  With the plastic carrier?

I considered it, but the sabot takes up a lot of case capacity.

I would say the advantage of the 500 in a handi would be the ease of using carbide dies. The disadvantage would be less availability in components.

I have a 45/70 and can't say I needed the .500, but I just wanted it for something different to play with. If it works out well I'd like to use it as a short range brush gun, mostly for hogs.

you love guns, you own a handi, the barrel falls off if unlatched while the forend is detached.... just get it, it's begging for it.  if you don't you'll just keep fantasizing about it. do it.  your pocket is burning... soon your back pocket will burst into flame.  you'll go nuts.  your estate will be confiscated since you're a committed nut and can't own guns anymore... then you have not a 500 nor a 45-70

the only way you can keep the spooks off you is to buy more guns!  nevermind what happened in waco  ::)

True, my bad :-[ I suppose we can say the same for the 44Mag. The 444 Marlin is a very flexable cartridge, and an excellent BB H&R addition.

The plus on the 444 is plinking with 44 mag pistol bullets. The minus is the lack of rifle velocity choices. Hornady just discontinued their 265 grain flat point due to lack of sales. Definitely a handloader's cartridge.
