Secret to firing 22LR in 22MAG rigles
« on: December 09, 2009, 12:52:26 PM »

It is easy to fire 22LR in any single shot 22mag rifle or pistol.
All you do is file off the rim of a fired 22 mag case and insert that
into the barrel. Then insert 22 LR and fire.  this will expand and
snug the fired 22 mag case in the chamber and you can manually
reload and fire repetively.

Try it, you can just insert a 22 LR into a fired 22 mag case and the
fit is pretty good.

On some bolt actions, the extractor might not grab the rim of
the 22 LR real well because it is slightly smaller in diameter but
if it not hard to get to you can pull it out with fingernails etc.

Later to remove the case liner from teh chamber, use an ice pick
or something sharp to bend the end of the shell casing a little
bit so you can grab it with needle nose pliers.

The bore is slightly bigger in the 22mag so the accuracy is supposed
to be worse but I didnt notice as I was not shooting targets

Thanks for this tip. I have an old single shot rifle that can use this.  I often see empty 22 mag brass laying around at the range.

I just tried this in my H&R 22M Ultra Varmint. Maybe I have a min.spec. chamber (ammo slips right in and ejects with no problem, though) but the 22LR in a cut-off (dremel & file) 22M case was way too tight for any use.
If you want the cheapest 22mag ammo look at the Win. Dynapoints (.45gr flash plated not jacketed HP @ about 1500fps). Around here they sell for $7-$8 /50.

It was to tight to fit into my H&R when I tried it as well. I may have be able to force it in (or not) but I did not try, it was very tight and would not comfortably fit....<><....:)

I have a Savage 24 in .410/22MAG that I love to use for small game and I would like to use 22lr since the 22 mag can damage an squirle if hit anywhere but the head. I'll give this a try tonight.
