A 12 ga. cut down to 18.5". It's a modern day trade gun. Birdshot, buckshot, or slugs. It eats 'em all.

Urban Jeep:  folding stock AK with 4 mags...but doesn't STAY in the truck since the risk of auto theft where I life is much higher than the probability of needing said truck gun.

In addition to my previous post I agree with rustyinfla, a 12ga shorty with a cut shell is devastating at 25 yards (imagine a 3/4" hole in the recipient) or a load of buck, or bird shot , the choices are ongoing and all good

I am beginning to think we have differreing ideas about what a "truck" gun is... ;)

I picture a truck gun as something normally carried in our truck and used for targets of opportunity, ranging from squirrels to groundhogs to coyotes and even bigger game. It does appear that some have other uses for a truck gun, simply because some things mentioned would not be useful for many styles of hunting.
Not that anyone is "wrong", just that we seem to have different scenarios in mind..

My truck gun is a single barrel 20 ga. I keep 10 buckshot and 25 #6 High Brass shot shells in the truck. I also keep either a 357 revolver or 22 lr single six in my truck also.

During deer season I generally throw my 223 in as well.

I think it depends on where you live and what kind of critters or other problems you will have to
deal with. 30-30, 223, 357 Max. Hard to go wrong with any of those.

I am at that point in life I don't own a truck.  However my wife and I do take our Jeep offroad here in Arizona.  I pack along a 357 trapper winchester, a 38 special S&W and a rebuilt single breechshot 20 guage (18" barrel, 34" total).  Second bag has 357 ammo (buffalo bore down to cat sneeze handloads) and a variety of 20 guage (buck hammer to bird shot)  This seems to have covered all necessities up to this point in time.  Army taught me to try to cover 90 percent of possible situations and carry extra ammo.

Truck Gun.
Hands Down.  308Win.
Will do every thing from varmints to deer with 125 grain bullets.  they are loading the 125 Reduced recoil loads m.

Great choice , I've used 130 grainers for years .

My choice is a .30-30 / 12 Ga. Stainless Handi with a wood stock , we have bears around here.

I don't think you'll ever need a rifle as a truck gun.  We don't shoot animals from a vehicle, I hope, although I can see where a rancher or farmer might want to rid his property of varmits. If you carry to be secure against humans, then a revolver or pistol is best, due to size and speed of getting into operation. Just my opinion.

Mike

I think it is safe to say that those who have personal protection truck gun have either a shotgun (hey i keep one on hand for trespassers) or a pistol. Those of us who keep rifles in the truck are generally protecting cattle or small game from varmints. This is just my outlook on this. I realize we all live in different parts of the country. I don't need a rifle to kill a bear, whereas someone who lives in bear country sees no use in my 22lr single six.

Hmmm, my "truck gun" is either the .44 Magna-port at the left, or a 1991A1 .45 Colt....or both.  For zombies, I carry a can of hornet spray and a lighter...I kept getting a lot of overspray from the double bit axe......

Anybody ever use a .410 on a zombie? You can carry a lot more shells in yer pocket than 20ga.

Mike.  I think your miss understanding what a truck gun is, It's not really a defensive weapon. It's just a rifle/shotgun/ pistol whatever that you carry around in yer truck for whatever....... Snakes, yotes, stray beer cans, people ya don't like, vicious dirt clods, zombies, ya know whatever.

Up to about a year ago, my truck gun was the H&R SS 12 ga, slug gun, 20" barrel cyl bore choke. Has rifle sights.
Hole in stock under recoil pad holds 5) 2-3/4 shells, 2 -6's, 2-00 buck, 1-slug.

Has been replaced with 12 ga Mossberg pump, SKS, Ruger Mk III deployed in various places, legally cased.
If all else fails, I can always shoot supper.

   No mike;
I don't shoot animals from my vehicle..it is illegal to do here anyway..but quite often I am driving along the roads around where I live and see groundhogs, fox, coyotes etc. out in the open, so I can drive on by ..then walk back with my truck gun. You can see why in these cases a handgun would not be the best choice...besides, I favor rifles.
   ...but that's just my view/circumstances..

I live in the city, so my Glock 22 is in the truck any time I am.  If I'm going to be out in the country, I have my Buffalo Classic wearing a scoped 270 barrel laying on, or slid under the back seat.

Originally I bought my H&R Handi 12 Gauge shot gun/ 30-30 rifle combo  when rifles were still legal here in PA to hunt Fall turkeys .  I wanted something short manuverable , safe to keep unloaded on the front seat of a Tacoma and most times behind the seat .  Since I lease 655 acres of remote timber land in the mountains of PA for recreation which lhas over 5 miles of gravel road or logging trailes on it and is surrounded by thousands of other acres of accessable land including the Allegheny National Forest and keep a small travel trailer down there I also find myself down there for extended periods alone . the property is gated , so many times you're opening or closing locked gated  after dark .

It got to be a pain to remember and pack a gun each time I went down .  Sometimes you remembered to grab a gun , but left the ammo .  A couple times I found myself staying down there overnight alone unexpectedly after just stopping by to check things out .  I've been broken into several times . we get trespassers on 4 wheeler at all hours of the day and night ; sometimes they're drunk .  Some have animosity because the state has been cracking down on them and many times they're agitated when they come thru or hold a grudge because they think I'm responsible for that .  I also wanted something that would be convenient and easy to either leave behind the seat of the truck when parked outside the travel trailer yet easy to handle if I took it inside the trailer at night .  I didn't consider it wise to leave a gun in the trailer full time .

Because of the surrounding public land there are several party spot where younger people gather to drink , party .  One time the Sherrif stopped to alert us to a rogue motorcycle gang in the area  that had caused problems one holiday weekend and then there were the Rainbow Family campouts .

Then "Bucky Phillips" was known to frequent the area  when he was on the run during his cop shooting spree .  In fact he broke into several larger camps in the area .

.... so there are animals and then there are "Animals" .

Sometimes I also have a hunting gun or two along or maybe my pistol .It's just nice to know you have a gun around if /when you need one .

I don't plan on shooting anyone , but I'm not going to allow someone to rape my girl friend either .

I really really don't expect any trouble from bears but again since attacks on humans are rare ; but surprise a mother with young or stand between them and a food source like the refridgerator of the trailer . They often cross the trail about 75 yards from the camp fire ring even in day light .  It does feel more secure to have something along just in case .

Yes , a pistol is nice to have around , but clunky getting in and out of the truck ; then you have to worry about trmoving it when you go to town for grub  to avoid someone seeing it on your hip .

Before i can really pick a favorite truck gun i need to know how big the truck
is, are they mostlyfull size ford, chevy or mostly datsuns, or small toyota
But come to think of it a full metal jacket 45/70 or 450marlin would probably
get the job done. Through the radiator is a certian kill but usually takes a little
longer. the bump between the seat and the steering wheel works best, but
is hardest if a passing shot.

For what you are doing a .223 SL would be ideal with a lightweight 2x7 scope.

The .223 in the Superlight 20in barrel-33in overall is an awesome truck gun! Very accurate! Good for axis on down!

sounds good to me Hawk.. Most of my uses for a truck gun are at rifle ranges. I can understand guys who like shotguns..birds, turkeys and such..but I'm a rifleman at heart and the .223 will take me from 'chucks (or prairie dogs) up through to deer, depending upon load.
My truck is a Ranger standard cab..so my NEF .223 heavier barrel, will hide nicely behind the seat. Perhaps som,e days I may choose to use the .22 mag or Hornet..for "close in" use.
Of course, if I felt the need a shotgun barrel for same, wouldn't take much more room.

To me a truck gun is one of my cheaper rifles not too worried about getting it scratched or a bit of minor surface rust. I have two a mod 94 trapper in 30/30 and my new handy in 45/70 gun smith has the later getting the chamber cut for 2.8'' length. But I do carry a SKS or Rem 600 in .222 with me on the Ranch for yotes. Just I like the idea of 45/70 in Grizzly country wile cutting fire wood, had a close call a few years back with a very large Grizz standing over a moose winter kill in my favorite wood area.
When I cut in that spot now I do carry a Rifle with me to make sure the coast is clear, a Elk hunter was killed by a Grizz very close by 2 years ago they deamed it a predatory attack, he got off one shot as his rifle was found having a fired round in the chamber. Fish& wildlife tracked and distroyed the bear in?
Something about going to that spot always gave me the willey's long before that happened with the Elk hunter. So I poke around first gives me a use for my .404.
If I lived in the States (only one State worth living in Montana) I would carry a big 6 gun either my Mod 57(41mag) or a Short Ruger Black hawk in 44 mag I have both but can only use them at the range (legally) ::) Not too worried about two legged varmints.
Walk softly and carry a big gun!
