I'm a big fan of a light polar fleece blanket with a wool blanket on top of that. I've found that a blanket should not be too heavy or it will slide off at night and be difficult to adjust.

What's your favorite blanket material?

Polar Fleece or Wool.

I make quilts. I like a fleece blanket instead of top sheet, then my quilt with double batting. I make all my quilts with double batting. Warm as heck.

As long as your sheets are fannel it doesn't matter what's on top of them you'll be warm.

down and quilts can not be beat for both comfort and warmth. wool is best for sheer warmth.

We use a heated mattres pads. It has a heat level control for each side. We turn it on about 30 minuets before hitting the sack....All we use is a lite fleece comforter. We dial the heat down to 58. Save bundle on the heating bill.

sounds like a good idea.... save money by funneling the heat to you instead of getting the whole house warm. my heating sucks, we just have to keep blankets around

Polar fleece. I grew up squashed flat under quilts in the winter time and hate the things. We turn the furnace off at night and sleep under a lite weight fleece blanket and a heavier one on top. It went down to 12 degrees Tuesday night and 15 degrees last night and we were nice and warm. Wonder where that global warming is. Certainly not here.

I'm doing this an I just spent a small fortune on replacing both heating a cooling systems in my house. Upgraded both furnaces to variable speed 95% efficient furnaces and coupled with two 15 seer condensing A/C units. Replaced all the duct work in the entire house to the new insulated version. Relocated the furnaces into the attic to free up some additional space in the utility room. So now that I spent all that cash I can't afford to run them!!

Well, one of the advantages of living in Minnesota is that I don't have a cooling system. It only gets hot a few days a year so we have never even installed an air conditioner.

I like wool blankets, and I have to have cotton next to my skin. Man made materials drive me crazy!
The older I get, the more I'm allergic to every dam thing made. Pillow case has to be cotton!

I prefer to sleep in a cool environment. Around 60 degrees.

microfiber cheapies from walmart work for me quite well... also you need a wife and dog in bed too... assuming neither has terrible breathe

My Dad was a Bulge vet. The car always had a GI wool blanket stashed in it somewhere, always. I carry on the tradition...

how can you stand those wool gi? those itch like fleas! they are warm though $:-\$ maybe as an overblanket. microfibers can be thrown over the shoulder like a cape for walking around the house and taking the dog outside

microfibers are soft and squishable... they fold up really small and hold quite a bit of heat for a light blanket. they don't do a thing for wind resistance though. not any good for outside without something overthem but I think in cabin4's case they'll work. he said he's broke from remodeling his house so microfiber will work on a budget.... how much are good wool blankets? are good ones not so scratchy?

An ample woman in her mid-twenties can generate quite a few BTUs. If I can remember correctly. I think. Probably? It's been so long, I'm not sure anymore. I wonder if I'm dreaming. Or making this up....

I'd probably go with the quilt idea today.

Thats what bothers me about wool, very scratchy.

Virgin lambs wool is what they make nice sweaters out of, and they are not "scratchy". It's expensive but very nice. Pendelton products are nice, but expensive.

Less expensive wool products are made from reprocessed wool and wool blends. They are less expensive but warm, and "itchy".

when I was a child my mom made me wear cheap/ugly sweaters all the time... can't get over the trauma inflicted upon me by low-quality wool. I wouldn't wish that on cabin4. ample women... hah. don't get the days of being single going in our heads jcn! aside from the "fun" he's getting at, a dog and spouse do make a difference.

if you make your dog a big baby you'll have a warm lump to follow you around the house. I guess that depends on the size of the dog though, a saint bernard would stop you from breathing. here is MY self-heating pillow

Flannel sheets and goose down comforters. Believe it or not my wife must have the window open and an electric fan blowing on her winter or summer and we shut the heat off at night. It has been down to 15 degrees here at night lately.

I'm pretty happy with anything my wife sticks on it.
She stays cold, so if it's warm enough for her we're both happy.
I can always hang my leg or foot out the side if I get to warm.

I've really gotten fond of wool over the past few years.

my local wal-mart is having a sale on fleece blankets today... the little ones that roll up, $4! that's my cheapskate gift to all the hunters in the family (I think I'm the only one that carries a blanket instead of 3in thick clothing.. I can move around without sweating, don't make noise and stay warmer/shut out wind). anyways, the big ones that were about $30 a week or two ago are $19 now... check wal-mart cabin. all the black friday goods that weren't sold out are marked even lower now.
