handi 45-70 vs b.c.
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:05:42 PM »
does anyone know what the velocity loss is by using the shorter barrel, if any? I know that no one here would ever experiment but has anyone fired a 45lc through their 45-70 barrel?

A 45LC round will fall right through the barrel of a 45-70.
45LC is .452 and 45-70 is .458.

Spanky is right on, I've dropped a .452" bullet thru 4 of my 45-70 barrels, 3 of em it dropped thru without slowing down, the 4th went down about half way and stopped, I probably coulda pushed it the rest of the way, but it was a jacketed bullet, didn't want to stick it in there!!  :o  To answer your other question, it depends on the powder, my H4198/300gr Nosler PP load does 2425fps in a 22" barrel and 2450fps in the 32" barrel. On the other hand, the H322/350gr Hornady RN does 2027fps in the 32" BC barrel, very accurate too! ;D  ½gr more chrono'd 1850fps in the 22" Handi barrel, 3-shot averages.

I have both guns. With the same load of SR4759 there is only 125fps difference. The BC shoots 1" groups and the Handi about 2.5. The Handi is the one I hunt with because, well, it's so handy.

Trying to fire a 45LC in a 45-70 would probably be a very bad idea.  Putting a 45LC in my BC showed me that the rim on the 45LC will just about fit into the chamber of the 45-70.  I imagine that the firing pin would strike the primer and touch off the round, but the brass would swell out, the head might separate.
If the zombies were after me and I was out of 45-70 ammo, I might try it, but short of that, it would be too risky.

Sounds llike someone needs a 45-70 and a 45lc accessory barrel.  Or...get the BC pair!  There.  I said it.
