Distance you have killed a whitetail deer?
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:14:32 PM »
Ok I've been reading some threads about bullets and enough gun and to much gun and yada yada.  All very interesting but it got me to thinking......... dangerous stuff I know. Seems to me that some years back I read that the average for the whole USA was only about 45 yards! Now that is the whole USA. big country, woods and all, north and south, east and west! don't know if that holds water but it would be interesting to see what we can come up with here.

So give me a "number" that you have actually killed deer at, make it an average if you want, just post it and I'll try to get an average for all that post. Not scientific I know, but we should be able to get a good representative number and average for the whole USA.

My average is 55 yards. (based on distances I could recall over the years all over Texas and Louisiana)

About 30 deer killed between 45 and 120 yards, hunting minnesota and missouri woods. The true 'average' would probably have to be about 55 yards though.

From about ten yards to about 200 yards. Most have been 100 and under. Prolly half way under.

Most of the land around here is very thick and in some cases swampy, so, 60 yards where I hunt mostly is about 60 yards. This is Mississippi and their is just not that many places for a long shot. That being said , I have killed MANY deer at 200+ yards ( longest was at 411 off a VERY sturdy shoot house rest). This was in planted fields in what little open country Alabama has. Longest was at Sedgefields Plantation ( no longer open) using a 300WM with factory 180Gr. failsafe ammo.

Probably 50-60 yds.  Always looks further in the field.  I had an old gunsmith/hunting guide buddy who told me he had killed every type of medium to large game in North America totaling way up in the hundreds and he said he could count the shots over 100yds on two hands.

Thats gonna pose a big problem for me to calculate an average. Its been too long since I used weighted averages and "Excell"!

Have mercy on an old man and just give me an average like Land_Owner, Possum and Bill   ;D  is 60 ok? or is it  more?

Average over last 30 years or so is probably 15 yards.  I mostly bow hunt with long bows or recurves, so up close and personal is a good thing for me.   ;)

I'm a "hunter" not a "sniper", so my shots are 200 or less.  These days, where i have my permenent stand, i usually get about a 100 yard shot.

I measured by pacing (and consulting with two oldtimers) a shot I took across a cornfield at a big doe which I dropped. It was between 245 and 260 yds. This was from a box stand giving me a steady rest for my .06 700 which has a Leo 3-9 (which was cranked up) on it. The ground rises to a bluff behind the target. She was standing still, I figured it was ethical and it worked.

Having said that, this gun season I popped a running spike with my 336 at like 20 yards tops. That was exciting.

I guess I would scew the average way up.  I've shot deer from 15-440 yards.  A lot of deer I shot at one spot were right around 200 yards average.   The main spot that I deer hunt they are either 100 or less or 200-300 yards.   I talleyed up the last 20 deer that I have shot and came up with 160 yards. The most fun were probably the closest,  All shot while stalking thru corn fields with a short lever in 357 Mag.  With the bow I average around 17 yards.

In Wisconsin for Whiettail I have shot anywhere from 10 yards to 300 yards but I would say an average of 125-150 yards over the past 40 years.  Out in WY I have gotten mule deer at the following ranges, 400 yards, 325 yards, 285 yards, and 110 yards.  The average mule deer kill yardage for me would be around 280 yards.  Alll mule deer were taken with a 270 WSM.  In the past year I have converted to a Marlin 308 XLR and a Marlin 338 MX and a Marlin 45/70 XLR.  I got my first antelope with my 308 XLR this past Sept in WY at 237 yards, one shot one kill through the heart.

Next fall for mule deer I want to try my 45/70 XLR because I doubt if I will have a shot over 150 yards where we plan on hunting.
