I bow hunt mainly and therefore most of mine have been twenty yards and under. I have never shot my bow at a deer using any pin other than my ten/twenty yard pin. With a rifle it is very seldom I shoot over 100 yards, I'm just not comfortable doing so since I don't practice alot at distances over that.

Longest was a paced off distance of 215 yards in Wisconsin across a cornfield with a .280 Rem from my Browning A-Bolt Medallion.  Shortest was about 15 yards across an arroyo in Vandenburg AFB with a Slug from my slug barreled Remington 1100 shotgun (that was a coastal Muley /blacktail, not a whitetail).

On average, most were 100 yards or less

I've only killed one, and she was shot 30 paces from the base of the tree I was in.  I hit her broadside with 12 ga 00, stopping her dead in her tracks.  I then walked up and finished her with a .357 to the head.

Well, I missed one at about 10 yards one time.

Most of them are between 20-75 yards, 30-50 being most common, I'd say. Longest ever was about 90 yards, with a .270 several years ago. Longest this year, about sixty, using 30-30.

meaning... at the ranges I kill deer - and our cumulative average, here? - a 30-30 is as deadly as a 300 WinMag. Right?

My longest shot was on a running PA whitetail at 125 yards.

::)  Not the longest Swampy, the average or the usual.  ;)

man they sure arent making it easy on you are they?
It makes you wonder if they are even reading or replying to the same thread ??? LOL

I wont let you down shooter!
My average shot is 30 paces! ::) Ha ha ha J/K
I would say 50 yard rifle shots.
I bow hunt now due to the lack of longer shots.
Did I mention I only mule deer hunt in Southern Ca. ::)
It would be a heck of a long shot to hit a whitetail from here! ;D
You can use my average if you want but it aint whitetail I hunt.
Sorry I threw a wrench in the works, I just thought I'd get a laugh. :D

i'm from the flat, treeless, windy Texas panhandle. i avg about 170 yards with the 6 deer i have shot. 4 of them being mule deer if they count. closest 50 yards, farthest 450 yards but only because i had to finish him off, first shot was from around 200 yds.

OK  with all the "information" I have extrapolated from the entries, we are at an average of 53.74 yards average distance white tail are taken in the US of A, So Far

There are more deer killed than are being reported so post your average here so we can put up the numbers.

well I have only shot one deer at less than 100 yards and it was no closer than 90 I would say my average is around 250 yards maybe 225 but most of them running shots. I am from Canada so I don't really know if you want to count me or not

225 yard running shots... hmmm... that is mighty impressive, that. I'd like to see that!

My average increased this morning, when I made my longest ever shot, about 140-150 yards. Load was a 150gr Federal

yeah it seems like a long shot but out here we have been shooting at running coyotes since we were 10 years old so if you practise enough it is a very doable shot

Very interesting topic.

Longest.....about 100yards, maybe a little less.

Shortest.....less than 10 yards.

Average.....30 yards or so.

I only hunt with rifles.  Maybe I should switch to a slingshot! :D

two of the longest shots were 125 yds, everything else has been 50 or under. Ole' Marlin 336 30-30. Never had one of them to go more than a few yds, most fell like a safe landed on top of'em.

102yds with the .50 cal cap lock using a patched ball.

I actually judged the doe to be around 115yds in the woods and had watched her pass through the same two foot gap twice before stopping there. The kill was spectacular as I held the sights just atop her back and behind the shoulder. When I touched it off that ball only dropped 1" and caught her square in the spine and she went down as if pole-axed.

Longests: 263 yds lasered from a box blind over a clear cut in AL. - .308 Remington 788
Shortest:  5 feet still hunting my woodlot with crossbow.
AVG: counting all archery shots about 45-50 yds.

My wife mostly hunts the edges and gets field shots a lot. Her avg for 4 deer is 65 yds.  Countng her misses still works out to about 65 (she drives me nuts, man she gets buck fever BAD!)

I think most of the deer killed in my county (according to another poster in another thread) are killed at a distance of about 1-2yds. . . the distance from the driver to the front bumper!

I have shot over 100 deer and the longest was about 100yds, closest was about 10yds. If people had range finders I bet alot of these people shooting these long range shots would be suprised at the actual range. Average 40 yards.

My average the last few years has been between 98 and 111 yards. These are the distances of the deer crossings from my favorite stand. I killed 7 deer out of this stand this year. I killed another deer from another stand 275 yards across a soy bean field. I use to have a place that my average was 200 to 400 yards.

I have been deer hunting for 40 years with 100+ deer bagged and my average is 50 yards. No archery deer all taken with slug guns or muzzleloaders.

Figured I'd chime in, my average shot seems to be a little bit longer than most here.

My longest was a measured 614 yards and my shortest ever was about 10 feet. My average shot though is probably around 200 yards.
