I'm also very curious what the heck the bag limit is for deer in the areas where you guys are killing over 300 in a lifetime even...It's 1 per season out here.  Guy would have to get pretty old around here to do that....

N.Y. has a tag system, between me and my kid we had 11 tags last season and filled 8 of them.

Last deer taken was 67 paces; I did take one at 150 yards a few years back and that's the longest shot in a very long time. I sight my rifles for 1" high at 100 which puts them just a tad low at 200 with my short action standard calibers. I hunt mostly timber and brush with some farm fields mixed in here in Northwestern PA.

87 killed by my best count, longest shot was 160 steps. I have killed 4 bucks at less than 10'. I powder burned a large nine point with a muzzleloader at about 4' or less. Most were killed with a bow 10 to 20 yards. I hunt close in thick cover.

I touched a doe on the nose with the barrel of my gun one time during buck season. I think I was more afraid than the deer was.

Well I once had a doe eat an apple off of the window sill of my ground blind inches from my face but that'll be in the "distance you have encountered a whitetail thread"   ;D

I think my brother has you beat. He shot a doe with his bow on a fence line so close that the arrow had not even cleared the rest by the time it hit the deer. He said the deer was inches from the bow.

This goes in the encounters category, but I have a picture of me petting a 6 point buck in Yosemite National Park.

I use to have a bull moose that would come to my house.  I'd walk out on the porch, and give him a bit of lettice, and he would let me pet him on the back.

Ok here goes the average!   The post says "killed" and I have "sniped" a few, I think its wayyy harder to find a good long shot than a close
one, notice I said a GOOD shot no wind, good light, good rest, not too much coffee.

4 longest kills total 3300yds
shortest- other side of the tree I was hiding behind
Bow, handgun, rifle, 72 deer total

Guess them long ones didn't help much,       63 yard average

And I live  "out west" where you need a flat shooting rifle and at least a 14x scope!

I shot a nice eight point Thursday (10/14) with muzzleloader, at about... 10 yards, if that. Lots of foliage up, so couldn't see far... deer wandered under my tree. From time to first seeing him to shooting was about ten seconds. GOOD DAY, but then a very long drag...

6 yds with 00 buck in Texas. 375 yds on Colorado Mulie. But average for Texas for me is about 20-25 yds. I only hunt bow stands with either crossbow or handgun.

I would guestamate my average to be about fifty yards. Closest was less than ten longest about two hundred. The vast majority was 30-40 yards. That's for rifle, pistol and archery.

This year I ahve only had one withing 100 yards when hunting, and she was in brush. Southern MN deer hunting has been very poor this year. Going to Ohio to the inlaw after Thanksgiving, hopefully my luck will change.

Only one.  In Moderate fog at 100 paces, standing off-hand, scope was way off, and I may have pulled left too.  Aimed at heart.  Hit 'em high in the neckbone.  Spun him from 3/4 angle to head away and dropped right there.  Only reason I saw him was I'd brush-hogged that area only a few days before, and there appeared to be a large shrub standing there.  I was walking with gun slung over my shoulder.  Couldn't believe I didn't cut that shrub down as big as it was, so pulled the gun down to scope it.  Shrub was a Big 8 Pointer.

This one, on Weds 11/17, was at about 25-30 yards. Angling away - I grunted, and he inconsiderately stopped behind a very large pine, necessitating a neck shot as chest/shoulders were obscured. Here was the good news with this deer: the 350 yard drag back to the car was mostly downhill!

11-21-10 8:25 am  rattled this one up less than a minute after I started rattling.  16 steps from tree stand. Shot with .223 Handi rifle base of the neck.

Hunt in a high north wind.... they can't smell and can't hear "mistakes". That's how you get 6 yds with buckshot (:  20 MPH gusts aint bad in close cover.

I'm also very curious what the heck the bag limit is for deer in the areas where you guys are killing over 300 in a lifetime even...It's 1 per season out here.  Guy would have to get pretty old around here to do that....

South Carolina has a LONG deer season.  In a lot of the State's Private land there is NO Daily bag limit on bucks, NO Season limit on bucks, NO size restrictions, and liberal doe days where a 2-doe limit per day is imposed (no season limit).  In a single season it is not impossible for a local to "rack up" 50 (or more) deer.

I hunt the SC Western Piedmont for 10-days annually (18 straight seasons) as a non-resident where Private land bag limits of 2 deer per day and 10 deer per season are imposed.  It is not unusual for me to kill 6-8 deer in 10 days.  They add up over the years.  Then I hunt my own land for 60 days and possibly kill 2 more (but the average for me in FL is MUCH LESS than 1 deer per year in 24 years of ownership).

Ask me about FL hogs and the number gets interesting as bagged average over 25 annually.

We have baglimits here....on private land, it's 5 does a day.... no total limit.

I have NO desire to shoot deer in those amounts though.

Wow!! Where do you put all the meat?

I got two does on opening day and had to have a friend fire up his second freezer to handle the overflow.
