Ruth found a very useful site, detailing cannons round Sebastopol

Good to be able to get more pictures and solid information out of Russia. The site was created by a retired Naval Officer from the Russian army, Yuri Kulikov.

No 6.  The small iron  the Russian cannon, calibre 61 mm. L with/without button 810/720 mm. Distance muzzle-trunnion axis 500 mm. Trunnion axis length 220 mm. No marks and inscriptions.


Would someone like to tell them what this is?   ;D

From what I'm Finding, it's called a Prussian Shuvalov Howitzer known as the 'Unicorn' (I think) and I guess is a newer version of Shuvalov's secret howitzer.

From the page that Bob Smith posted, at the bottom there is an exit button that takes you here.
Go to the Guns in the cities of the world link here.
At the bottom of that page are the links for the Prussian Shuvalov Howitzer.
I Googled Prussian Shuvalov Howitzer and found what I did. Apparently there were different sizes of unicorns.

I hear the Russians are a bit short on cash these days, you might be able to go there and work out some good deals.

This has got to be some the most intricate casting you ever see on cannons.  Those are some dolphins, one of them lost his head it appears.

In the time when Russia was in real dire straights, with their military top brass not even getting paid, our intelligence agencies were worried about their generals selling nuclear tech and/or material to the highest bidders. I wonder if the person/people in charge of the St. Petersburg Artillery Museum may have managed to misplace a few of those fine bronze cannon and mortars out of all those hundreds that are lying outside along the building, in order to keep some vodka in the cupboard.

Are those russian guns or trophys ? The castable with the emblelished with the leaves looks alot like a Sweedish gun or Bravarian .

Then again I really dont know too much about Russian guns .

Kabar ,you are all over this ! That is  long rumoured 'Shmoe' the which of course is the howitzer in the ongoing evolution of "The Lost Bronze " serries in the Smee line .

The long barrelled 'chasers in the bow' are known as "Curlys" ;D

There probably aren't all that many here that know, or are all that curious about this gentleman, and this British forum, but I think DD and GGaskill will know who I'm referring to. Well, at least I was curious, so I did a liitle checking, and it turns out that this is the same Bill Curtis that's on the Muzzle Loaders Assoc. of Great Britain Forum.

He also at one time published a book of  British Artillery drawings and he shows up on the British Militaria board at www.martinihenry.com and does sound like he knows what he is talking about...when he speaks, I listen.

Agreed; It was Adrian Roads who first suggested to me, that posting a question on that forum might turn up some good results, and he was right. I've posted a few questions there, and in these instances Mr. Curtis has responded with learned answers.
