new slug barrel

hello just received my h&r 20 guage back from barrel add on .  total time 3wks from the day i shipped. i ordered 22in heavy rifled barrel with new thumbhole and forearm stocks. gun looks and feels good. my question is i beleive they sent me an older barrel. it has 8 groves . i was wondering if i should send it back for newer rifling barrel. gun is for deer  mostly under 75 yds .  read these guns were accurate even with old rifling . also been trying to stock up on shells but started wondering if diffrent lots of ammunition will change poi .  so if i sight in now find good slugs will it shoot the same brand next year  or will they be far off. thanks for any replies

New rifling, or old rifling, it doesn't make much difference at the ranges you will be shooting, or at least the difference won't be noticeable I would imagine, and the most important thing, just as you said, would be to find the slug that your gun likes, and shoots the best.

Once you sight in with a certain brand the poi shouldn't change enough at 75 yards and under that you would even notice that difference either.

Most people sight in every year anyway just before the season just to make sure the scope didn't get bumped and knocked off zero anyway.   It's just cheap insurance to fire off a couple rounds rather than missing that once in a lifetime trophy, and wish that you had shot it before you went hunting.

I've had good luck with Remington Buckhammers, and the Hornady SST's are accurate at 100 yards out of my gun.

I like how the Buckhammers performed on the two deer I shot, but I haven't had a chance yet to test the Hornady's on game yet, but I'm hoping that will be soon.

I've also got the thumbhole stock on my 20 gauge slug gun, and it's one of my favorites.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Is the 22" "compact" slug barrell avail? it is not listed on their site.

yes 22 compact barell was installed on my frame i called before and guy on phone said should be no problem the barrel i received is older rifling i think( 8 lines ) i cant tell where it was made. no stampings on barrel  if i can get it to shoot 2in at 75 yrds ill be happy  planning on using nikon 2x7 scope

I don't recall ever hearing that the new rifling has really done much to change the accuracy of these guns. They have always been acurate at 75 yards.

I shoot year round too but not sabot slugs at $2.00-$3.50  a pop !

 what kind of slugs do you guys shoot that are cheap . ive looked into reloading sabots seems to be cheaper after start up costs, but wasnt sure if i could find a good combination that shoots well. its about 1.5 hour ride to range and $25 to shoot. im planing on couple trips. i want to shoot this gun till either my arms fall off or i have the confidence of a well placed shot . i passed on a nice 10 ptr about 75 yds because i wasnt sure if i could make a good shot.

That is a ways to go to shoot, and costly too. I live in the country just off a county highway. We walk out the back door to the neighbors lean too ;) And it dont cost a thing.

 I will give you credit.
Anyone who can pass on a nice buck because he is not sure of an ethical shot should be commended. Way to many iffy shots being taken. ;)

i live in chicago  used to be able to shoot at friends house but now its all built up around him.  there are no other public ranges that im aware of . you have to join gun club. tried knocking on doors in farmland no luck.

I would try the buckhammers first. And yes it will shoot plenty good for a shot at 75 yards, even 100 yards as mine does.
