Yuba County man arrested for deer hunt on golf course
A Yuba County man has been arrested for allegedly poaching deer on a golf course and in a nearby neighborhood with bow and arrow.
Christopher Franklin Speaker, 35, of Olivehurst, was arrested Tuesday by California Department of Fish and Game wardens on numerous hunting- and weapons-related charges. Additional charges include allegedly violating his felony probation and possessing ammunition as a felon.
The case began when employees of Alta Sierra Country Club in Grass Valley reported finding deer carcasses and arrows on the golf course property in late October. Nearby homeowners reported similar unsettling discoveries on their properties. Similar reports continued until after the close of deer season on Nov. 1.
Warden Jerry Karnow recovered a total of 10 arrows as evidence. Some arrows were reportedly found lodged in the siding of homes.
Additional clues led officials to Speaker, including a photo on his cell phone of a dead deer that he allegedly showed to his probation officer, and archery equipment seen in his vehicle by a Nevada County Sheriff's deputy who happened to stop him in the middle of the night.
A search warrant served on Speaker's home Tuesday uncovered deer meat and archery equipment that will be analyzed for a match with the dead animals. Ammunition for a gun also was found.
The case developed after calls to Fish and Game's tip hotline, (888) DFG-CALTIP
