Contender Forearm - a work in progress (Now completed)
« on: December 11, 2009, 04:35:30 AM »
Here's a couple pics of a Contender forearm I've been working on. It started as a piece of walnut I found on my property a few years ago while cutting firewood. Unfortunately, I cut/split/stacked the whole thing before I realized what I had. That was an expensive 1/2 cord of firewood!

I managed to salvage a decent sized piece that had no splits. I roughed it square with the table saw and shaped it with my router, dremel tool and a belt sander. This is quite an accomplishment for me. I have no wood-working training at all and just acquired some equipment which I barely know how to use. But I still have all my fingers!

Here it is mounted on my 17HM2 pistol setup. It's going to get a good sanding and then about 10 coats of tung oil. I plan on installing a sling stud to attach a short bipod for field use. Then I might strip and tung oil the grip. Should be a rock-solid vermin smasher!

csterner ...

I like your style.  Some folks see firewood, others see a new forearm for their pet TC.  The way I look  at it, you"ve nothing to lose and a lot to gain.  Bet you'll be thinking differently next time you crank up your chainsaw at the bottom of a big ol walnut tree.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Charlie,
Nice work, take your time, don't get in a hurry.  A friend of mine owns a small mill and he will give me all the scrap wood I'll ever use.  I've got a forend in the works now.  Good job,

Well, after 5 coats of tung oil, it's finished.  I installed a sling stud on the bottom to attach a bipod for field use, or it can be removed for shooting off a rest.  I "floated" the barrel by installing two rubber O-rings over the barrel nuts.  Gives it a nice 1/16th inch clearance all around.  This gun is a shooter.  It's an armor alloy frame that's been opened up to accept blued/ss barrels.  Bought the 17HM2 barrel from Kitsap last summer.
