mgm 6.5-284 or 260 rem
« on: December 11, 2009, 07:55:09 AM »
:)I,m getting a new barrel for t/c pro hunter but can't decided between 6.5-284 and 260 rem. I am planning on 27" ss barrel, 9" twist. Help me decide pro or con. Will be used for deer sized game 107 to 140 grain bullet.

Thanks

jim

I only have a .260 so I have little to compare the two but a .260 Remington is a fine choice without a rebated case.

The 6.5-284 will give you alittle more range, but the game will not be able to tell the difference, if you hit or miss. It`s easy to prove the 6.5-284 is better on paper and imposible to prove it in the field.

I can't help you decide which cartridge you should cut it to, but I can tell you a 1/9" twist barrel will not fully stabilize 140 grain bullets in either of these.  I would opt for an 8" twist in any 6.5mm.  I know this from first hand experience with a 264Win mag w/ Shilen match grade barrel.

If your only use is for deer hunting I would think you would be happy with eighter of the two. If you shoot target also I would choose the 6.5X284, not that the 260 shouldn't be an accurate choice.

I've not been there, but it seems to me that the rebated rim would have to be a little awkward in a break open action rifle. ???

I have and shoot both rimmed and rebated rim. Unless loading to a high pressure and getting sticky extraction I personally find no difference in loading unloading the two.

Dave, I think your fingers are younger than mine.  I've not tried a rebated rim, but I sure see a difference between rimmed and rimless. ::)  Walt
