E-bay blues
« on: December 11, 2009, 08:11:15 AM »
Been wanting a new guitar and my wife wants to get it for Christmas - so far so good. We live in Hawaii, so our best shot at selection is via the Internet; again, not so bad, lots of choices, and shipping options. Found exactly what I was looking for on Ebay from a private seller, read the ad thoroughly, opted for buy it now - hadn't been that excited about a purchase in long while. Then it started to fall apart ...

The ad specifically stated $50 shipping to the US, no caveat for HI, UK, PR, etc. as most vendors indicate. $50 is steep in my mind; I've shipped multiple long guns in a single package for less, but the seller was using UPS so I figured ok. Then the email comes, you live in HI? I'll have to check. Day goes by, then we get a refund notice with a note saying shipping was to high, sorry.

I guess I figured ebay ads were like contracts, and actually the ebay rules validate that. So if a seller posts on there what they have and what they expect, and a buyer agrees, a contract is entered. If you're not willing to stand by your ad, don't post ... that's the way I operate anyway. So I put in negative feedback and simply state seller did not honor shipping terms as posted in ad, cancelled and refunded order. The seller writes back they want me to change my feedback, and without posting the whole thing, here's the key points:
- no apology
- don't see how the buyer could expect the seller to make good on a simple mistake of one word (continental)
- pulled the "Christian" card (as if Jesus wouldn't stand by His word I take it?)
- single parent lost a business trying to pay for Christmas
- I could put negative feedback on you but I won't because it stays with you ...

Wow, have we come so far that were not willing to stand by our word? And if the seller had made an honest mistake and was in a financial bind trying to stand by their word, a simple apology and explanation would be fine by me, I understand. But to go on to browbeat someone about negative feedback, implying that holding someone accountable to their word is unchristlike ... that's just wrong.

I did change my feedback to neutral, but let my comments stand so anyone who reads the feedback will know what happened. If what they said is true, then I want to be gracious, regardless of how they handled it.

Side note: found another guitar on ebay, this time wrote the seller before I bid, told them I'd need to talk with the wife before I bid. In the time it took me to talk to her, they had moved the min bid up $100 - 0 bids, so it was the seller and not someone else. These are not people, not businesses. I think I'll find a nice shady foreign owned warehouse in New Jersey and buy my guitar from them - at least I know what I'm dealing with.

Sounds like no fun. I've bought a couple of things via E-bay, but only a couple. One was a guitar from a shop in Arizona. Very satisfactory, but they had done a lot of transactions and had good reviews.

What kind of guitar are you looking for? I'm just curious. I play electric rather than acoustic because I can play at low volumes without waking the family. For example, tonight I'll be doing my Friday guitar binge, playing until about 2 or 3am while everyone sleeps on the same floor.

I used to more active on e-bay, but have been avoiding it lately because all of the scammers have caught on to it. I've had good luck with the things I've bought through GBO.

hunt-m-up, yeah I guess I've had such a good experience dealing with the folks here on GBO that I sorta expected more folks to be like that.

Questor, I'm looking for an ovation acoustic electric. I had a real pretty balladeer custom years ago, sold it when I was a missionary. Not good enough to justify a new balladeer, so looking for a good used one, but probably going to wind up with a new celebrity.

TeamNelson:

Cool! Good luck with it. I know there are good sellers out there. There's a column in one of the guitar magazines by a guy named Will Wray (or Ray) who seems to be obsessed with buying guitars on E-bay. He gives a lot of tips. I've read several of them and he will often contact the seller of guitars he's interested in, offering to buy it for a particular price.  He also frequently sends questions to the seller of a guitar he is considering bidding on.

They've made a lot of changes to how evil-bay operates today.
A bunch of the early stuff was to help/protect buyers/sellers. 8)
Most of the changes of late have been to protect them and paypal. >:(
My participation has dropped off considerably over the past few years.
Unless it's something I can't get a decent price on somewhere else I don't shop there anymore.

TN I had a similar issue where I won an item then after the fact the seller raised the shipping $50.00. I contacted ebay about the issues after the seller filed a non-payment compliant and ebay removed the seller.  One of the reasons ebay is going down hill fast is because the buyers are not reporting the bad sellers, they are just getting pissed and leaving... Feedback systems work only if those leaving it are honest about the transaction. Contact ebay and get them removed so others do not go through what you did... just my .02 worth.

Man, I guess I have been very lucky.
I have well over 600 positives and have only ever had 2 bad deals and the seller took care of one of them.
The other never did.
I guess my turn is coming!

Just encountered a problem with an E-bay seller.I purchased a pocket knife on 12/04/09.Did the PAYPAL thing and was told my knife would ship in 2 to 4 days and that I would receive tracking info when shipped. On 12/11/09 I emailed the seller asking him where my knife was and I got a refund because he lost it.I emailed the seller telling him that if he is willing to acquire another knife and sell it to me for the same price that I would leave positive feedback other wise I will hit him with negative feedback and he is presently rated at 100%.So far I have heard nothing.Slipshod

DONT argue with the seller!!  If you did your part and the seller didnt and he dont correct to YOUR satisfaction leave a NEG> and dont look back move on to another item/seller I used to buy alot from e-bay when you could get gun parts and reloading componets (bullets) but since they have become so simpleminded because some IDIOT bought a legal magazine from their site and started dropping the items.   Jim
