New mod. 70 winchester by FN scope bases question
« on: December 11, 2009, 03:21:11 PM »
Hope some one can help out on this. My son bought a new mod,70 winchester sporter mod. in 30-06 this is the one that is made by FN in SC and is suppose to be like the old pre 64 mod 70. Our problem is that we have not been able to find anyone inc. winchester that can tell us which scope base this thing takes. I put a straight edge across the action and the rear is lower than front did not measure but looks like between 1/8 and 1/4 inch and hole spacing is different than other winchesters and screws look smaller. have any of you ran into this and what bases did you use.

Thanks Deaconllb

Do you mean anyone in the WINCHESTER company or in the city of WINCHESTER VA?
Just curious.

I would have thought they would have taken the same as before FN acquired Winchester since they bought all the remaining stock of model 70 frames that Win had on hands which it was my understanding was considerable.
Maybe they have used all of them up and are now making them their self.
Sorry I really can't help since I have not bought a new model 70 since FN bought Win out.
Someone will know I am sure.

Winchester company after pressing 1-2 -5 8 -9 1-2-5 well you know the drill, son finally got hold of a person and he had no clue thought they were all the same, most companys dont care about the customer just what they can get out of them. This seems to be a new tooling an no one knows any thing about it. There are a lot better guns on the market from other companys. Any way we will find out sooner or later but was hoping to get it scoped for the special deer hunt in two weeks.

I purchased a Model 70, 30-06 at Cabela's Hamburg PA store in June and had my Bushnell 4200 Elite scope mounted in Leupold bases and rings at the time of purchase.  Unfortunately, I do not have the packages with the part numbers but Cabela's should be able to help you.

Good Luck,

A little late, but I ordered DNZ's gamereaper mount for a long action model 70 for my new extreme weather and it fit perfectly.  I ordered through midway and called first to make sure the mount was the same and got a definite maybe, so just took the chance.  I therefore think the new FN model 70's have the same mounts as the old model 70's, with the exception of the very earliest models, I think something like under serial number 64,000 or so.

I think you may be right as I see in Cabalas add for scope bases that say will fit above 65300
