I am a novice when it comes to TC guns/pistols. What I am wondering is this. Is the Contender the original? Can modern high pressure barrels be fitted to it? What difference it the G2? I am looking at purchasing a TC pistol for hunting next fall but need to hang around this forum to find out more. Thanks for any replies. Charlie

The Contender came before the G2. Appearance and internals are different. The G2 like the Contender will only handle low pressure rounds. The G2 can be recocked without opening the action unlike the Contender. Barrels will interchange between the two. Grips will not interchange.

Thanks David. By low pressure rounds for the Contender and G2 you mean most pistol (through 44 mag) and rifle barrels through 30-30 and the like correct?

I guess with the Encore pistol frame you can get most high pressure barrels right?

Yes the Encore can be had in most but not all cals. I do have several Encores but the drawback is they are heavy and hard to reach the trigger for short finger folk. Being heavy they do help with the recoil on the big bangers.

While the G-2 has some newer features like recocking without opening what it doesnt have is a decent trigger pull. The recocking feature I could care less about. I would still look around for the older frame with the firing pin selector on the very top of the hammer. I have 2 stainless and one blue and would not trade any of them for a G-2. Al

interesting....i'm a mirror opposite to bigal52.

the recocking feature is very nice and handier on the G2....as in nuthin to worry about with it at all. you do not have to completely break down an old model though. ya just gotta hold it closed and pull the trigger guard back.

i have....maybe a half dozen old model "easy open" contender frames, with maybe 50/50 blue n stainless. they are great, but i would not trade my 2 G2 frames(one blue, one ss) off for an old model either. 

trigger comparisons....that one gets old to me. about any firearm you buy needs a good trigger job. unless a previous owner has already done it. one of my G2's measured 15 oz's on a digital gauge. if you can't shoot at 15oz's....you just can't shoot. :P

the pressures a contender can handle is affected by the case head diameter. you can still get some mighty powerful chamberings in a contender action. example.....you can't shoot a .308 case in a contender, but you can a .223. both would be considered "high pressure".

I'll have to agree with Koyde on the G2 trigger, I like mine! Love the recocking feature as well.

And like bigal52 I have several old style Contenders and would not trade them for a G2 or any other gun.

Then on the other hand I would not hesitate to buy another G2 or recommend them to another.

I have a mixed herd as well, and have no complaints about my G2s.  All have triggers as good as the ones in my original Conteders.  To each their own I guess.

I traded off my G2 because of the trigger. The G2 trigger is sufficient for 98% of the shooters out there, but I'm not one of them. If you plan on shooting IHMSA or doing precision shooting, the G2 trigger may not make the cut. My 2 easy open frames triggers are 6 and 8 oz.s, and there are times they feel like I am pulling a truck with my trigger finger. For hunting, I change back to a stronger trigger spring and give the sear engagement another 1/2 turn, and viola! I've got an unbearably heavy trigger again! It takes roughly 5 minutes to do so. The design of the original Contender is very user friendly.

Since you plan on hunting with it, I'd say the G2 would be the better choice. The factory trigger should suit you fine, the re-cocking feature is great for hunting, and I understand the G2 is a little stronger frame. Whichever you choose, Enjoy!!

The area in WV. where I live blues frames around $250.00, SS $300.00 in very good to perfect condition. I have got complete setups from pawn shops in cals. I didnt want for about the same price. But I dont find these deals often. Being as I build my own grip sets I sell the grip set and barrel on the pawn shop guns and use this to buy a custom MGM barrel in my cal. of choice. Price in a given area has to do with demand.
