I am building a kit gun. Bluing help! Stock finish thoughts
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:21:39 AM »
I purchased a Cabelas Hawken Kit gun about a year ago and I am finally getting to put it together.  I was curious what you all recommend for a cold bluing product and finishing of the stock.  I have never done anything like this.  Most the guns I own were bought new and I have never had much need to blue or finish a gun.  Thanks!

Have you thought of finishing the metal parts in brown instead of blue ?
Birchwood Casey has all sorts of wood and metal finishs that work well. There browning solution takes a little more work than cold blue but looks real nice on a Hawken rifle.
You need a propane torch or a way to heat the metal, then apply the solution, steel wool lightly then repeat several times until the color is deep then rinse it well and oil to prevent any further rusting.
The stock finishing can be from very simple as just sanding the wood smooth and rubbing on a couple coats of Tru Oil with your fingers or it can be very laborous such as sanding all the way to 400 grit, filling the pores of the wood, sealing, staining, and many hand rubbed coats of oil until a glass like finish is produced.
I have built several muzzleloaders and finished many others and for a hunting rifle just like to keep it simple but nice looking. The cold blue works OK but wount give deep color but might be just what you want ?  Have fun with it , most anyone can end up with a nice looking rifle and at some point if you want you can always refinish it and go a little farther on the wood and metal finish.   Jed

I second the browning.  For a muzzleloader browning is more original and really gives a tough finish.  Follow the instructions and make sure the metal is really clean.  My first one I browned using the oven in the kitchen when the wife was gone for the afternoon.

So is it you did not want your wife to know you had gun parts in her over or were you trying to make sure you didn't know you could turn it on? :)

Laurel Mountain Forge browning works great and is easy.  It requires no heat.

These LMF stains are great and easy to use.

For a final finish I'd use Minwax Satin Tung Oil Finish......it's awesome and very easy to use

I've finished dozens of guns with these products and have had a lot of happy customers.

I was concerned she would toss me out if she saw me with parts in her oven...

It just struck me as funny that you added that you did it when your wife wasn't home.  I laughed out loud when I read that.

Sir I beleve usless you've not found something in your life that should NOT be shared with your wife, you've not lived yet.. I detonated a primer in a case one evening while still a young married. My lovely bride believed the story I told and that all was well. The truth was the accumulated grit in the pressure relif hole in the die was pretty deep in my carcas.. I dug it out with a needle and never told her.. Now after all these years she's used to strange sounds, smells, and even small explosions and shots from my shop or just out the basement door. She sometimes even asks if I'm OK..isn't that sweet?

1.  I agree, Laurel Mountain.  Have used it with excellent results.
2.  Last stock I refinished I used Watco Teak Oil Finish mixed two to one with
Formby's Tung Oil.....excellent, durable finish.  Used the same on my
Hawken and have hunted in the misty rain on numerous occasions and it still
looks good...Search for stock finishing...there are some great instructions on this site.

3.  Gun part in the oven when the wife was not home.....My kind of guy...
Hey bubba, try this.....
I made my basic mix of catfish stick bait in the blender while the wife was not home...
30 live shiners
3 chicken livers
1 small chuck of cheese
garlic powder
flour
When blended, put in a mason jar, back the lid off 1/2 turn and let it ride around in the
back of your pickup in Oklahoma in July and August....now its ready.. with a good cross wind...
O'yea, don't forget to clean the blender

Youthpastorjon, a very under rated bluing product people dont give much attention too is "Blue Wonder" i used it a couple times and never had ploblems with it and it was cheap to do as well.
Just remember that what ever you use the preperation of the gun is just as important as the blue job...ewaning make sure it is smooth and polished and remeber to keep all oil off it by wearing gloves durring the blue process.......good luck
