shooting pistol bullets in .35
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:22:40 AM »
Does anyone really shoot .357 bullets in their .358, Whelens, or others?  When I can come up with the scratch I want to have a barrel bores to either .33 or .35.  The .338 Federal seems a good option, except for the "pistol bullet thing".  Actually, anything I reload for, I find something I like and that is what I stick with.

Thanks

I shoot the Hornady 180 gr sp sspb in my 358 caliber rifles all the time. I have several different flavors. This bullet is a .358 diameter. I have shot it in both .358 bores and .357 bores no issues.

The .001" difference is hardly worth being concerned about, there's that much or more difference in actual bore dimensions and bullet dimensions.  ;)

You mentioned the 338 Federal, alot of us would love to have a barrel in that chambering. I have a 338 wildcat barrel on a handi that I built from a stub and it has very close to the same powder capacity and performance to the 338 Fed. Mine is formed on the 45-70 brass and is a rimmed version of a 2 inch long 340 Weatherby.
There are no pistol bullets in 338 cal. but I have found alot of cast bullets from 180 to 300 grains available,
I just havent had the time to start shooting any of these yet but they should be fun and alot cheaper than jacketed.      Jed
