About 4 months ago we had to put our little poodle "Butch" down. He was 14 and and basically ran the house. Butch had been in all of the lower 48 states with us and although I complained about motels that didn't want pets, he was a pleasure.
He played like a puppy all his life, and in fact did so, right up to three days before he got sick. He went down fast, and we did what we had to do. He has a place in our yard (1/2 acre) with another pet we had named "Tank".
The wife has cried off and on for all this time and today, we found what we wanted.
Meet our 8 week old Rat Terrier "Bubba". He ain't very big right now, and won't ever be, but before long he will realize he has it made in the shade.

That's a cute little fella you got there.

I got my grandson a black spotted terrier just like it. Mine last two old ones went down and I was lost so to slip it by my wife I bought it for mt 4 years old grandson. They are very bright and really playfull....make a fantastic squirrle dog.

I am sure you will enjoy it.

Nice pup Dee. Dogs are pretty special critters. I don't even want to think about the day our dog goes. She really is part of our family. I'm sure it was tuff when your dog went.

Congrats concerning the new member. Losing old pets is tough, I bought our son Tony a Golden Retreiver for his forth birthday & was with us for many years & his passing was a tough loss, he was a fine animal.
I hope you enjoy Bubba for years to come.

an aunt of mine has a rat terrier that is extra rat looking. it's body is an off white with black thrown in (like badly done urban camo) but he's saved by his big baby personality and the top of his head is black and in the shape of an executioners mask.

I assume yours will be a big baby too, but not as ugly (not wearing a cool permanent mask though).

That is good medicine. He is a cute one and soon the heart mends. Our Rudy is about the same age. It will be tough when He goes----the answer is to get another and let it take your heartaches.
I love dogs and children. Bet we are all gonna be children in eternity and I hope we have dogs.

im sad an glad for you at the same time dee.. i had to put my old bull dog ,black jack dn after 13 years as prostrate cancer got to big a hold on him ,,before we caught it..i had great admiration for his courage but don t recommend this breed for families.. no matter what the whisperer says..
but i wasn t right for a week or more after he was gone..black jack was my warrior friend..
my sympathies to you ,, your wife an mother..
now my wifes little dog ,,just poures love an affection on her..little blossum is mabe the best medicine for her and hence myself.. ..that we could ask for ..enjoy your new buddy dee.

Well I was informed this morning that his name is not Bubba OOPS! He's "Buddy". Boy, I think I better start paying closer attention.

There's a great movie for all the dog lovers. It was released in 2000. It takes place in the 1940's and its about a boy growing up in Mississippi with the help of his dog, Skip. The name of the movie is My Dog Skip. Worth renting and watching.

You sometimes come off as a crabby old fart, but that pup will soften you up a bit

We have two 10 week old boxer pups here from a litter our female had. One we are keeping for my wifes cousin until their newborn gets a little bigger and the other is still for sale. We put some bells on a cord on the back door and would ring the bells everytime we would take them outside, The last few days they have been ringing the bells themselves when they have to go outside, it seems to be working

My mom and dad have a Rat terrier named buddy. He is 14 years old and still one heck of a good dog. Won't be long Dee and he will think he is ten times as big as he is.

Ya know I have been training dogs for years, and even made part of my living with them (Tactical K9), but I have never heard of the bells trick. That is so much easier than teaching them to bark or come and get you. What an idea. Tomorrow! Bells for the door. Thanks mirage.
Oh yea! The reason I sometimes come off as a crabby old fart? Sometimes I AM a crabby old fart. Most likely the dog will also become a crabby little fart. The last one was. I sometimes had to fight him over MY chair.

Yea, the little cuss is pretty much house broke now. No accidents in 2 days. He seems about as honest a pup as I've ever seen. He's easy to read on his need to go signals, and for a Rat, he's pretty laid back. Right now he's laying on his NEW BED, the wife got him watchin me type, and dozin.

Nice looking pup!
The cord or rag with a bell hung from the door knob works! In the past have trained a "Rotty",bloodhound, and labs to ring the bell when they wanted to go outside! The bloodhound was
also smart enough if she was upstairs with me and needed to go out,instead of going downstairs to ring the bell she would set at the side of the bed and look straight at me and give a couple of low grunts to get me up to let her out!

Tha little clown has taken over my wife's recliner, he is really easy to read, and will quite down when you want him to. Not bad for coming 9 weeks old.

We kind of went through the same thing about 6 months ago.
We had two toy rat terriers that had been with us for around 15 years.
I used to call them Brat Terrors instead of Rat Terriers.

Both started having health issues.
One got to where she could only go backwards.
The other developed some cancer.
We had to put them both to sleep.
Took the wife about 2 or 3 months before she wanted another.
Below is a pic of our new queen, we call her Jazy.
So far she's lived up to here name.
She's a Min Pin.

Well we've had ole "Buddy" almost 2 weeks now, and he is makin a hand. He house broke in about 4 or 5 days, with us paying a lot of attention and with minimum accidents, none of which amounted to anything, and is one of those up for anything, and anywhere kinda dogs so far. Spent Christmas at my mothers and he was a gentleman all day, with lots of patience.
He plays when you wanna play, and sits quite when you don't. No chewin problems, he chews the chew toys we gave him and I think he's gonna be a keeper.
As I type this in my cave this is what he's doin in the floor.

Congrats on the puppy Dee. Good luck. We have a golden that is somewhere between 13 and 14 years old. Can see him going down. It'll be rough when it's time. One time with a dog I had named Gypsy,(sound familiar) she was a very friendly dog, although very intimidating.(half Rotweiller,half shepard). Had an insurance salesman to the house. The only person she ever stayed away from, but never took her eyes off him. I could tell she was very uncomfortable with him. Trusted her instinct. And invited him to leave. Don't know why, but just figured a she knew something I didn't. Again, good luck. gypsyman

I recently had a double heart breaker. First my old German Shepard died, he was 14 years old and went all of a sudden, Dr. said likely a heart attack. We also have a minature poodle (9 years old) and a minature Schanuzer (12 years old) but I decided we needed another German Shepard. I adopted a beautiful 13 week old puppy from am Airman that was being deployed and couldn't take it with him. At 13 weeks he would sit, stay, fetch and could open most of the doors in the house, smart puppy. Two weeks after acquiring him he got sick, I took him to the vet and was told he had parvo and was beyond the point where he could be cured. (Dr said if the white blood cell count was low it was almost impossible to cure them, his was VERY low) I had him put down, funny, after only two weeks we had become partners, it was a hard decision to make, but necessary.

I have been looking for another one, but haven't found that special dog yet. I preffer to adopt rather than buy, there are plent of really nice dogs available through severl web sites. If anyone here in Texas is looking for a Shepard take a look at Central Texas German Shepard Rescue, Austin Texas German Shepard Rescue or North Texas German Shepard Rescue. They have some very high quality dogs available. I fell in love with a three year old female at Central Texas site, her name is Mia, (check out the site and look into her eyes) but she will not work with the other two dogs so I am still looking. If you are looking for a German Shepard it is worth checking into these sites.

Dee. Good luck with your new friend, I hope you have many happy years with him. Rat Terriers can be testy at times so be patient in your training.

Well guys, me and ole Buddy just got back for a three hour Jeep prowl in the country. He likes the Jeep too.
