survival in mountains of alaska.
« on: December 13, 2009, 02:43:15 AM »
the politically correct way.. let me say first ..freedom means they have the right to choose the method ,in which they try this..
i just watched a tv show where two groups survived im not sure how long .. supposedly the way animals an early pioneers did,, in alaskas mountain wilderness....i critisize certain things....
everything up there except mabe mountain goat either take game or moves dn from the highest country during the coldest times..they all lost big time wt. but increased thier chance of dieing in this adventure ,,because they refused to take game..now most every other animal up there will take game or move dn where food is to be had....
the weak or fragile are first taken,,is natures law..out in the worst nature can dish out ,,survivalist need follow an live by natures method of surviving..i was thinking this the whole time i watched the show..
to me thier experiment was of no value ..as they didn t live by natures rules but mans artificial rules..
in all thier suffering i had no admiration for what they did..
now haveing said my opinion ..i invite enlightenment as to where im mistaken ..in my concept of real surviveing..also my knowledge of wild lifes survival methods in those conditions..ive only seen on tv or read about alaska,,so my ideas im sure leave a lot to be desired. slim..

You're way ahead of me, because I cannot bring myself to watch those silly survival shows, or any other so-called reality shows.

I think I saw a portion of the show you are talking about.   I changed the channel, I could not watch their stupid antics.  They were so afraid of the bear, and did so much to avoid contact with it.  Ha, that bear was protein and fat.  If they had killed it they would have had food far over a week.

Alaska is unforgiving, you do something stupid and it's all over.  But their is no reason to die of hunger up here.  Food is everywhere, and shelter is not far, if you use your head.

I've never actually been to Alaska but I did watch a show about Alaska once and have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a few times so I guess that makes me an expert on things Alaska.  :o  ;D

I don't watch any show that purports to be a "reality" show as I have noticed that the one thing totally and completely lacking in all of them is reality. They are as fake as a three dollar bill. I think they stick those animal lovers who can't bring themselves to harm an animal to save their own lives onto them for the anti hunting effect of it and for no other reason.

To go off into the wilderness whether Alaska or anywhere else with the mindset you're not gonna kill game to eat or predators to save your life is just plain STUPID. It is beyond ignorance which is a mere lack of knowledge it is STUPIDITY of the worst order. There is nothing more fitting to call them than fools and idiots. There that's the opinion of a true expert on things Alaska by virture of my time spent at the Holiday Inn Express and having watched a show about Alaska once.  ::)

I agree with you Slim.

The most efficent use of resources is what survival is about. As hunters we take the animals meat and throw the rest away. Primitives used the hide, guts, bones and even hooves and claws as tools. Same with plants. eddiegjr

heck even i coild survive long enough to film a tv show. the real test comes with an extended stay. those people would slowly but surely delpete their bodies supply of nutrients and they would slowly succumb or just might be turned into an Alaskan version of Alfred Packer once the will to live kicked in.

Well I watched most of the episodes, common guys, I couldn't find anything any better, and my loading room is too cold these days. This was anything but survival, they all (4 groups) had good shelter, 3 cabins and a wall tent. They all had some basic provisions, the meat and fish were just to vary the diet. They were all city folk with no outdoor experience. I guess the only reason I found it a bit interesting was to watch how these dudes screwed up and most of them were whineing and moaning all the time. The only two with a little pluck was a girl and a cement contractor. I remember the girl argueing with her two guy partners. They had 550 bullets for a 22, and she wanted to sight the rifle in, but they didn't want to waste the bullets. Worst screw up was when these three decide to go "visit" their neighbors, just a few miles away. They almost died on the trip that took several days, and then they were scared to go home so we had 5 people using rations  planned for 2. Not much, but it was better than the other 99% on the tube at the time.

In 1974 A good friend (an old farm boy from Ohio) and I got stranded by a snow storm up in the White Mountains North of Fairbanks.  We spent five days in a snow cave we built.  When we saw the storm coming we tried to get back to our truck, but when the whiteout hit we decided to hunker down and sit it out.  Temp did get down to -35.  We had 25' of wire, 50ft of mason's cord, two pocket knives, two hunting knives, a small ax, a small shovel, a .44 mag pistol with 6 rounds, a .22 revolver with 200 rounds.  We had one leather water bag 1qt, 4 cans of beer, 4 cans  of Coke, and 6 candy bars.  Two wool blankets and two sleeping bags.  A small canvas tarp, and four candles.  At the time we both smoked a pipe so we had plenty of matches.  And one deck of cards.  Ever since I hate Gin Rummy.

We ate Rabbit, squirrel, grouse, and Ptarmigan.  We caught fish in the near by stream, by chopping a hole in the ice.  We melted snow for water by cutting the tops off the beer and coke cans.  After we drank the beer and coke, could not let those calories go to waste.

Five days later when the storm broke we dug the snow machines out and went on to the truck.  We never fired a shot from either of the pistols.  Still had the bag of water, and 4 candy bars.  We ran out of pipe tobacco the third day.

Nither of our wives reported us missing.  I now think both were hoping we would not come back.

I seriously doubt any of those folks on that TV show would have made it.

i was watching this on educational tv.. i watch mucho tv now as i must mostly stay close..
other than fool with the guns or what ever project that can be done close or in the house.... i took my 4-12 bushnell last night off the cz 22 an put it on the
30 30 ..the leverolution has me excited as to what i might get it to do with a scope with better magnification..
this an piddle around the house are my limitations due to karrys illness. i slip out to the well house an shoot toward the woods.the concrete well house sends the noise out the door an dn in the woods so that it sounds like a hunter out there somewhere..
if living is gonna be similar to the people on that show ,,i d almost have to just forget the whole thing.. absolutely void of common sense.. slim
ps this country boy can survive ..but not like them.. i don t even understand thier thinking.. not sure i want to..
ive ask my daughter if her husband can get me a big doe for the freezor as thier christmas gift,or something.. i told her id pay any cost he incurs.. the fellow out back hunting, has pretty well cleaned out the deer ..i doubt if theres as much as a four pointer or doe of any size ,within 5 miles..
i must admit being a care giver  24 -7 was not something id  planned on..but doing this right will be the
crowning achievement of my life..shes not going to feel alone or afraid as long as im able to prevent it..
she s  my joy and her smile or laugh is my happiness.... slim

I understand what you mean, but it would not be a show with out a film crew,
would be hear say. I don't think many if any of the folks on the survival shows
would last 2days. All the survival shows they have in the Islands some where
where the weather is nice, they have them playing some kinda games that have nothing to do with survival. I really don't see how they can have a REAL
survival show, without taking the chance of someone dying.
