Remington 1100/11-87. Even if I had more to spend it's still what I'd get.

Hands down the Reminton 1100 or 11-87. They are tough, reliable, and can be found for a lot less than $600 used. I'm with GB, buy the Remington, and spend the rest of your savings on shells!

Take a good look at a Mossberg 930. I've had mine for about a year and a half. Put nearly 1000 rounds through it without the first hiccup. Soft shooting to boot. Mine came with a 28"VR barrel and a 18 1/2" for $459. I would buy mine again in a heartbeat.

+1.  That combo is exactly what I'd buy.

I did a lot of homework on this subject not too long ago and I ended up liking the mossberg 930 the most.  The remingtons are great, but if you want a shotgun that can handle both 2 3/4 & 3" shells for less than $600 then the mossberg is it.  The 1100 only handles 2 3/4 and the 11-87 only handles 3" unless I misread something.  The mossberg combo listed above is what I would/will buy when the time is right.  I also looked at the Saiga line of shotguns because they are under the $600 mark and handle both 2 3/4 & 3" loads, but they are a little finicky with the cheapo target loads by reputation and they just don't look like a sporting gun to me.

brother, I'd go the other way & look for an 870 or 1300 on the cheap, second-hand... :)

Can't offer real advice on autos, as I've never owned one.

I'll assume you are talking new, therefore, GB +1!!

If you are talking used/nearly new, my choice is a Browning A-5, followed by the Remington. My Browning is a 1972, purchased in 1980. It doesn't know I didn't get it new. My Remington is a pre Model 11. Last patent date is 1908 and no model number. Was my Great-Uncle's. Other autos in the family have been all Remingtons and the favorite being the 1100.

The 11-87 has had many models over the years and I've held one that was marked 2 3/4", 3" & 3 1/2".  The Remingtons website used to says it's chambered for 3" only, unless I missunderstood.  Now that they have the new website I can't find where it mentions it either way.

Since shotshells "headspace" on the rim, any 3" chambered shotgun can physically fire a 2 3/4" shell. The 11-87 and most newer semi-auto shotguns all have some sort of gas regulation which makes them able to cycle magnum loads as well as light target loads.

Remington made a 3" magnum 1100 that handled 3" only, not because of the chamber, but because of the oversized gas ports in the barrel. They made changes in the 11-87 so it would bleed off excess gas from 3" shells, while still cycling the 2 3/4 shells. Mine is an early production model, and it will handle anything.

Granted, the older 1100's and 11-87's are some great guns. However, Remington seems to be having some QC problems lately. There are a lot of reports of problems with the new 887's and the 105CTI's. Several of the new 1100's, 11-87's and 700 series rifles are leaving the factory with things that shouldn't have been missed by their QC. I would look at any of the new Remington's closely.

Like GB and others say, get an 11-87

Beretta 390, Wally World still sells the synthetic stock version for under this price point I believe. Or a used Beretta Pintail, inertia operated.
