Making chips, cannons next
« on: December 13, 2009, 05:15:18 PM »
Got the new lathe up and running tonight.  Couldn't resisit making chips.

Friend needed a widget for his ice auger. Sent me measurement in fractions.  Got my yellow tape measure out and started machining. For accuracy I always used the north side of the black mark on the tape.

Controls work a little different than the old lathe-smoother.  This lathe doesn't shake an rattle like the old one. Was looking for back gear...oops that's right Gearheads don't have one.  The chuck use D1 camlock mount instead of the old screw on screw off.

Lots of learning going on.  More chips tomorrow when I dial the tail stock in.

Going to have to get a shop heater. The old gas stove can't keep up when it gets below zero, 12 inches of new insulation in the attic or not.  It's -17 right now.

Doug that looks like the makings of a sabot making tool !!!

If a slot were to be cut in it ,and a blade it might work .   ;)

Realy bad when you have sit at traffic lights.

Good weather for projects...got a ton of them all dealing with that lathe. Several of them Cannons projects.

I'll take this weather over Southern weather anyday and I have lived in all better warm spots---SoCal, Redding CA, Hawaii, AZ, NM, TX-Houston and El Paso, Northern Virginia and the East Coast of South Africa.

I'll take the laid back life style of Montana over the heat and the Rat race any day...plenty of places to shot my cannons also.

Port Orford ranks right up there as one of the most beautiful places I have ever lived...but the rust level!  And cold, now there was cold.  You haven't felt cold until you felt 38 degrees and 100% humidity, chill right to the bone!.

It's a really good looking lathe, Double D; what's the first artillery type turning you are going to do?  And did you get those leveling pads installed yet?

Going to have to get a shop heater.

Maybe you should take up waste oil collection, like used french fry oil from fast food places.  They usually have to pay to get rid of it and you could use it to keep warm with at no expense if you underbid the existing haulers so you cover your collection costs.  If it becomes hard to use it all up, give some away to friends.

More likely heavy fog.

Yep the fog...it can be worse than rain, soaks everything all the time!!!   I have seen it so thick there that it was difficult to see beyond the hood of your car...try being the local Deputy Sheriff and get an emergency call that requires redlights and siren response.  The fog bounces  the sound and light back at you.  You roll down your window and look down, and follow the yellow line beside the car door....

Still beautiful there.

It's a really good looking lathe, Double D; what's the first artillery type turning you are going to do?  And did you get those leveling pads installed yet?

T&M

first cannon project, carriage axles for the SAMCC cannon-out of white oak.  Then after that a golf ball mortar for my grand daughter.  She asked for it.  I am her Grandfather and it is my responsibility to grant her every wish.  If her mother objects, I will remind her, she is my daughter and I will ground her and send her to her room. Daughter usually responds  "Please!? Please send me to my room!"

The Machine mounts work quite well.  When Southpaw and I set the machine up on the bases and the mounts weren't adjusted the Machine seemed a bit unstable.  But once adjusted the machine now feels pretty solid.  While doing the break in at 1400 rpm the lathe just hummed.  I was afraid to run the old lathe that fast.   I will finish the break in this morning, change the oil, recheck the level, then dial in the tailstock.  The old lathe you could put your hand on it and feel it run, this lathe, you can just barely feel it running, barely.

I looked into that when I looked into building a foundry.  The locals chain resturants all recycle.  The local Hutterite Colony grabs all the rest. Engine oil waste is also recycled.  There is also a storage issue, where do you keep it until you need it for a couple weeks a year.

O boy , snazzy..........that's a fine looking piece of kit.   glad to see you've recovered from the major surgery DD.....................................Following the opening of the wallet. Hope you have many happy hours working on your new lathe.

Yeah that hurt.   I was going to look into getting the motor rebuilt and see if I could find another switch. And, while I had it apart replace the frayed drive belt.  Then the old wooden base was getting wobbly so I looked at building a new metal base.  Sat down with the wife and a budget and she said. "No!!! Take the money out of the Money Market account and buy a new one!!! This isn't the first time you have spent money fixing it"

So in the interest of domestic tranquility I agreed.  But just to be technical, I didn't spend the money, she did.  I had her do the transfer of the money.  Still was painful.

It was interesting, when I took the old base apart, once I took the bolts and lag screws out, I could pull all the nailed parts off with no resistance. Every single nail was loose and could be pulled loose with my fingers.  Even the lag screw were loose and were turned out with my fingers.  The base was built by the first owner and came with the lathe 25 years ago when I bought it. It has been moved all over the country and set up and taken down dozen of times.  I hope the next time the new lathe is moved is at the estate sale---as is where is!

How come Santa got you what I want and need, maybe there has been a mistake. I guess I'm just going to have to man up and bear this grief, but at least if you post a lot of threads on the projects you're going to be working on, I might be able to learn something.

Ya know, there is no machining forum at GBO and I think it needs one because why should we have to go somewhere else?
I know there are plenty of talented machinist here, just need to find a volunteer to moderate. I'm not qualified but I did just buy a new (old) lathe.

There is a pretty good machining forum over at http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/index.php.  That's where I found GGaskill.

Pretty good catch huh?

the age of the lathe isnt that important
but the condition and knowledge of how to use it is
I got a friend who have a very old lathe , must be close to 100 years soon
he is able to do anything I can do in my lathe with that old piece except for treads
but ok the higher rpm in a modern lathe is nice to have when its small pieces that should be turned

I think you will be best served by posting machining questions on the Practical Machinist general forum rather than starting a Machining forum here at GBO.  There are lots more really experienced machinists over there than there would be here for a long time.

Yes, it's a 1938 Sheldon 10x24 overhead countershaft. Everything seems real tight without much wear. The guy I got it from said it was purchased new in '38 by a local company and given to the employee that he got it from when they closed down. I was going to get more details when I went to pick it up, but he got sick and was in the hospital by then. I thought by the condition it may have only been used for maintenance, it was either a canning company or they made cans, not sure.

Doug gave me the bug and a catalog . My identical lathe is up and running also . I made adapter's for the machine mounts to move them out to the out side edge of stands . Really rock solid  . The new Mill will be here next week . Doug promised he would come over and show me how to run it .  8)

For no other reason would a person of sound mind move here .  ::)

Of course like he said , the Natives are not to restless , and easy to get along with .
Although he lives in a county with a stop light . My county has no stop light any where . They are primarily  used as revenue generators , who the heck stops in a one horse town ?

What county is that southpaw ?

ETA In Belize they had two stop lights in the whole country ! And no electricity outside of Belize City and the Cayo district and Belmopan .

This was 1998 , It's changed a bunch since then . Not for the better .

You may be froze but you got salt of the earth people there .
