45 Colt choke
« on: December 14, 2009, 03:54:09 AM »
I have a 45 barrel that will not chamber a 410 and it has a choke. I remove the choke to shoot it, but that leaves bare threads at the muzzel. I have a spare choke and need to decide to whack it off or bore it out. I think the difference is mainly cosmetic.

TC made some 45Colt barrels with removeable chokes designed for shooting 45 Colt shot loads but not .410's.  I have a 10" Octagon model, but I've never seen a S-14 barrel made that way.  I'd check on the rarity of it before I went to whacking.  Shooting 45's in it with the open threads does not hurt it in any way.  Walt

You probably already know, that if the threads are on the outside, a good smith can make a cap to cover those threads, if damaging the threads is of any concern.

Maybe it is the rarest TC barrel of all and you just won the "lottery".

The threads for the choke are internal. I am going to modify a spare choke, not the barrel or original choke. I have been shooting it with the choke removed, I just dont like these exposed threads.

The photo is another barrel [44mag]. I dont have a picture of the 45 barrel, which is a 10inch octagon.

The barrels were designed by TC to be shot with the choke for shot charges and with out the choke for normal 45 Colt ammo.  Millions of rounds of ammo have been shot through these barrels(they have always been one of TC's most popular) and as far as I know nobody has damaged the threads yet.  If yours is a 10" Octagon barrel I would think it has external threads on the barrel.
Walt      BTW I'm sending you a PM.

Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken.  If it labeled as 45/410 on the barrel and doesn’t allow chambering of 410 bore shotgun shells then T/C will repair it for free.

The exposed thread are not a problem when shooting 45 Colts, so your efforts to make a custom choke will probably end up damaging the barrel when you test fire the first round.

No, it is labeled 45 Colt.  It has been my experience that 45/410 barrels group poorly in 45.  Waaaay too much freebore. Reminds me of shooting .452 in an old Colt .454 . They get down there, somewhere

Yes, I have heard the 45/410 barrels are more of a novelty then a practical tool.  Plus 410 bore shotgun shells are too expensive.

Sounds like you have a hotshot barrel, made for the plastic shot cups loaded in the 45 Colt case and not 410 bore shells.  If so, then the chamber shouldn’t be too long. Have you shot it at all?

Merry Christmas,

Yes, This is a 'hotshot' barrel. I have shot it a bit [I have 6 barrels].  Shoots very well. I would like to get a super14 in 45colt.

A curious thing is there are no dire warnings not to shoot bullets with the choke on. It squeezes down to about .380 so I don't intend to test it.

Mine will chamber a 2 1/2" 410 that's unfired but not a 2 1/2" fired hull.  Still a fair amount of freebore there.  I've not done any serious shooting with regular bullets so I really don't know how it'll shoot.  I know it recoils quite freely.  Ouch!  Walt
