You can read all about it on various forums, but I can't find anything from the News Agencies or the Michigan DNR as far as a story that goes along with the pictures. Before I say anything about it, I'd like to read some reports from a local news station (St. Martin Island area). Thanks for posting it MS.

One of the last posts shows the DNR and the hunters smiling for a group photo.
Doesn't look as bad as first impression.
However it sounds like there are a few fines for violations.

Here is the real story. No poaching going on, but 10 citations were issued for improperly tagged deer.  Impressive picture and it got a lot of people riled up and a bit of jelousy too.  QDM management from what I could dig up.  Pretty impressive cull deer!  Would love to see the shooters!

Citations issued in Lake Michigan island ‘deer pole’ case

By Bill Parker, Michigan Outdoor News Editor

Published: Friday, December 11, 2009 9:38 AM CST

Lake Orion, Mich. - A series of pictures circulating on the Internet of a buck pole on St. Martin Island in Lake Michigan is creating a buzz among the hunting fraternity.

The tiny island is located off Wisconsin’s Door County Pennisula, in Michigan’s Delta County, just inside the Michigan/Wisconsin boundary.

Despite reports of a poaching ring, which are circulating with some of the pictures, detective Lt. Wade Hamilton of the DNR Law Enforcement Division’s Special Investigations Unit says the photos are bigger than the story.

Michigan COs visited the privately-owned 2 1⁄4-mile by 1 1⁄4-mile island on a routine patrol on Nov. 19, he said.

“We made contact with 20 to 30 hunters out there in numerous deer camps,” Hamilton said. “We issued 11 tickets for tagging violations and cited them into court in Delta County.”

Hamilton said all hunters appeared to have permission to be on the island and that there were no trespass issues or other game law violations.

“The pictures are accurate,” he said. “They had quite a buck pole.”

The trip to the island was not precipitated by a complaint, but was part of a routine patrol.

“Officers have always worked patrols on various islands when time permits,” he said. “We weren’t there on opening day, but we made it out there by the 19th. There’s an old adage that you never know when a CO will show up, and we like to keep it like that.”

True enough and they will pay for it. But it's not like they didn't have the tags and were poaching as first reported.

I think the pictures are pretty impressive! And these are the cull bucks!  I saw a picture from a couple years ago when they were only taking big bucks, supposidly they were becoming way over populated and stressed so they had a cull hunt this year.  May be one of the best hunting places in the country.  Puts those scrawny little Texas bucks to shame.  Should be interesting to see the pictures in a couple years.  I bet their tagging practices will improved dramatically also!

As long as they did everything legally in taking the Bucks, I also think the pictures are rather impressive. These pictures remind me of some my 'ole GrandDad's pictures from his deer camps back in the 1920s-1950s in Sawyer County Wisconsin.

I remember my Granddad tell me that he would see 40 deer a day on state land.

Interesting that you brought up Sawyer County.  My Buddy is member of the Sawyer County Swamper's.  He's hunted up there for 25+ years and they have always had a pretty impressive buck pole. Not as big as those guy's but good numbers.  Since the manditory doe assasinations and wolves, they don't see a fraction of what they did much less harvest them.  And the club hasn't shot a doe to my knowledge in decades.

Buckskin,

I posted the following article over on the Wisconsin forum earlier today. Might be some heads rolling at the DNR:
