Well, I had just about the same thing happen this fall with my 270-7Wby conversion. Had the smith take off the 270 barrel, Rem 700, and screw on the mag barrel. All he had to do was open the bolt face, and check headspace.
I placed the now new barreled action back into the wood stock, had to open the barrel channel for the larger mag conture, both barrels are free floating, placed the scope back on the Weaver bases, bore sighted, didn`t see anything to move, and shot. The first round printed 1 inch left and 2 low from the original 270 zerro.. I was very surprised..but happy.
