When we talk of who contributed to the world of guns, I think Elmer would win hands down..Jack was a trained writer, and was very good at it. Someone once said he made a good living writing mainly about three rounds the .257 Roberts, 30-06, and of course the .270.
Elmer helped develop the 357 mag., 44mag, 41 mag. he helped make handgun hunting a sport, in rifles he fooled with the present .280 Rem. in the form of a .285 okh, of course he shot .300's since the 20's , and recommended Ben Comfort use the H & H at Perry. He developed the 338-06 in the form of a 333 okh, his 334 okh was very similar to the 340 wea., the 333 belted became the .338 win. mag. he also developed a shorted 338/378 mag. Of course on many of these, he worked with others. He also was an early user of the 7mm mag. his was a .280 Dubiel,
In shotguns, his love was the 16 ga. and he pushed for the 1 1/4 oz load for it, he was also a loyal fan of the big 10 bore Ithaca.
In addition to all he did for the world of firearms, he loved his fans...Mr. O, on the other hand was a bit of a snob...but a fine writer...I don't think Elmer went much beyond the 8th grade. His letters were a hoot to read. I still have some.
Much of his trouble with editors came from his typing skills I am sure...Elmer was very much the common man who became famous. He never forgot where he came from....He was a genuine westerner , and great gunman.
