First name that came to mind was Boddington.

i'm not much of a book reader  :)

'Course, a good story by a true writer I'm sure would trump a mag writer anyday..Although, I wouldn't call Boddington a pansy  :D

i went back and read all articles he published during the war. it became very apparent why the troops loved him and the public. he suffered with the troops, he took the same chances..with no gun only a typewriter. he never spok badly of them or his country. he gave out tidbits of information about soldiers that all at home clung to. ..they looked at it as it was their johnny or bill he was writing about. he was also obviously affected by those that were killed, he was one of them and they knew it. had he not been killed he would have been a great newspaperman after the war. the soldiers loved him the people of this nation loved him. he death was a great loss to us all.

Of todays writers, I'd say Craig Boddington or John Barness (?)   Maybe I am just showing my age, but a lot of todays writers are big on gear, short on experience.  Maybe it was that way 30 years ago too, and I just didn't notice, but at least a lot of the old time writers grew up and lived in an age where they had a lot of hunting and shooting experience, and an often times not politicaly correct way of telling a story..... ::)
A lot of todays writers are really just salesmen for the outdoor / gun / ammo companies, and it shows.

I like O'Connor too. It's great when an outdoor writer really knows how to write. He could. And he did fine work.

One tragic example of writing foibles is from Warren Page. He was clearly a man who had experience and a lot of good stories, but his tendency to use a lot of slang make his books unintelligible because so much of the slang was circa '40s and '50s an is no longer in use. I read a book by him once and there were whole chapters I couldn't understand because of the amount of slang. I really couldn't tell whether he was writing about a good experience or a bad experience.

Peter Capstick is in a class by himself. Although he doesn't come to mind first, he was the finest and most entertaining outdoor writer of all. I've read and re-read his books many times, and always enjoy them.

My vote: #1 Jack O'Conner.........#2 Elmer Keith.......#3 Charlie Askins

It was always fun to watch Jack & Elmer arugue ove the 270/30-06 and the big bores. Both of these men new first hand of what they were talking about. Like Elmer said , "HELL I WAS THERE"!

The 270/30-06 still take a lot of Deer & Elk and for those of you who like the 338 today did you know that Elmer was the god father of it way back when thew 333 OKH came out as a wildcat?

I must be getting pretty old......... ;D
I spent a lot of money on Guns, Wild Horses & Wilder Women but I guess I just wasted all the rest!

;) When we talk of who contributed to the world of guns, I think Elmer would win hands down..Jack was a trained writer, and was very good at it. Someone once said he made a good living writing mainly about three rounds the .257 Roberts, 30-06, and of course the .270.
Elmer helped develop the 357 mag., 44mag, 41 mag. he helped make handgun hunting a sport,  in rifles he fooled with the present .280 Rem. in the form of a .285 okh, of course he shot .300's since the 20's , and recommended Ben Comfort use the H & H at Perry. He developed the 338-06 in the form of a 333 okh, his 334 okh was very similar to the 340 wea., the 333 belted became the .338 win. mag. he also developed a shorted 338/378 mag. Of course on many of these, he worked with others. He also was an early user of the 7mm mag. his was a .280 Dubiel,
In shotguns, his love was the 16 ga. and he pushed for the 1 1/4 oz load for it, he was also a loyal fan of the big 10 bore Ithaca.
In addition to all he did for the world of firearms, he loved his fans...Mr. O, on the other hand was a bit of a snob...but a fine writer...I don't think Elmer went much  beyond the 8th grade. His letters were a hoot to read.  I still have some.
Much of his trouble with editors came from his typing skills I am sure...Elmer was very much the common man who became famous. He never forgot where he came from....He was a genuine westerner , and great gunman.
