McGowen Barrels? Anyone have one?
« on: December 14, 2009, 06:45:58 PM »
Anybody have any  experiences with McGowen barrels?   New ownership has moved them from Illinois to Montana.  Very crisp operation.

Not only are they still in business they are soon to be Sponsors of this site. I'm just waiting on the check to arrive to add them as our latest sponsor and get their banners up. Fred Zeglin is now working with them as Production Manager so expect to be hearing more about McGowen barrels in the near future.

I first learned about McGowen barrels in a story about a project gun involving a .400 Brown Whelen on  a Ruger M-77 action. I ordered a catalog and it was great to browse through it and drool over all the gun smithing things they did and their seemingly  limitless caliber list.  They were in St. Anne IL then.  Harry McGowen  sold the label and retired I guess.  Glad the name is living on in a more modern era.

I have a pre threaded savage barrel in .20 practical fluted SS and it is a shooter. Very happy with it.

Yeah well when I posted that it was my understanding it was a done deal and the check would be arriving soon. Now, well I dunno it's beginning to look a long way from a done deal and I'm no longer waiting on the check. If it shows up fine if not oh well they wouldn't be the first to tell me a check is in the mail that never got here.

I had one installed in 7mm-08 on a Rem. 600 action, and it was a tack-driver.. but alas, I sold the rifle.  This was back when they were in Illinois.  I remember that they asked for a cartridge that I shoot so they could set the correct freebore.  If I was in need of a barrel-job, I would go back to them.  Bob

They are the brand of choice that my gunsmith buddy uses on his personal projects.

Mcgowen did several barrels for me back in the 60s or early 70s, they were very good, still have a couple of rifles with those barrels but if they have a new owner then how good the Mcgowen barrels were won't tell you much about how good they will be now.
