Realtree Ultra .308 Dick's Sporting Goods
« on: December 15, 2009, 02:50:57 AM »
I picked up a Realtree .308 from Dick's Sporting Goods last night.  It has a 22" barrel and a scope that has no markings other than "4-12x40".  It is a CBA serial number gun, made in Ilion, NY.

It was on sale for 249 and they honored my $15 off of $50 coupon even though it said "not for firearms" on it.  Got it out the door for $253.77.

I have a few questions:

1)  Why does Dick's call it an Ultra? I don't see "Ultra" anywhere on the box.
2)  Is the barrel considered a "bull" barrel?
3)  Who makes the scope and how bad is it really?

Thanks,
-Kyle

1.)  I think H&R/NEF considers most rifles with heavier barrels and "ultra".
2.)  I think that's a bull barrel.
3.)  No idea on the scope.

For what you paid I think you just bought one heck of a setup.  I'd love to hear about how this rifle shoots.

Congrats of the new H&R!!  ;) This has been discussed before, scopes are made offshore by the same OEM that makes Remington combo scopes, they won't tell who or where and it wouldn't matter, OEM optics mfrs make scopes for many scope brand marketers. Barrel markings do not make any difference, barrels are made with markings such as Ultra or SB2 long before they end up fitted to a rifle, SB2 marked barrels are fitted to SB1 frames on 357 and 44 mags for example. IIRC, all of the Dick's special order guns were bull barrels, but a simple measurement will tell you, medium and small bore are .800" at the muzzle.

I bought one of the scopes off these guns from a member here and have had no issues not sure who makes them but they are not junk maybe one thing Remington has done good for H&R's. Kurt

well this my first post but not my first HR/nef. I picked up one from dicks in 223 sunday myself. My box says it has a 24" barrel. I really like that they used realtree camo and not some generic pattern like some manufactures use. You will notice with alot of guns from dicks they have them made special for them. Like all the remington sps varmints have green stocks.

Tim,

Yes, it does measure .800" at the muzzle.  So I guess I have a "bull barrel".

Kurt,

Well that sounds great.  I guess I will run it with this scope on it for now and see how it does.

Roy,

Yes, they had a few in 223, and I noticed that the barrel was a little longer than the 308.  I'm surprised that they used a name brand camo.  Not sure what that cost them.  I agree, some manufacturers skimp on this, and it looks horrible.  (Honda four wheelers are the first one that comes to mind).

All,

I plan on getting some Remington Core Lokts tomorrow.  Any preference between 150 grain and 180 grain?  I will be shooting whitetail deer under 200 yards.

Thanks all,
-Kyle

I have always been lighter, flatter shooting kind of guy. But many like the slow and heavy. Under 200 yds 150's will work fine. If you can get a box of each and see what your rifle prefers.

I was checking h&r's site. They list the 22" bull barrel 308 under the ultra hunter and the 24" bull barrel 223 under the ultra varmint. Definitely tell they are special made for Dicks.

The .308Win 22" bull barrel is the barrel for the 308 Survivor, the 308 Ultra Hunter has a standard contour 22" barrel.  ;)

Right you are. I guess I didn't read close enough. Now I wonder why the didn't just use the survivor base model for both calibers dicks offer?

Major retailers and distributors tell H&R what they want and they just make em for em, 250 minimum at a time unless it's something special like a non-standard chambering or bore, then it's a min of 500.

I got the same 308 last summer. did the JB bore past thing and put a Nikon Pro Staff 3X9X40. With core lokt 150gr I was was shooting1.5" at 100 yards and I had the coffee jitters. Got it bloody with a 3 point buck at 160 yards. The eye relief on the scope that came with it seemed very short to me and when I put that scope on another gun I discovered that the adjustments were backwards, up was down and right was left.

So basically the Dick's SG exclusive 308 is a 308 Survivor with Realtree camofluage synthetic Monte Carlo stocks (non superlight), and an unknown 3-12x40 scope.

That's easy enough.

I hope I don't find any good deals when I go to get ammo tomorrow at Academy Sports.  I just got a BC Carbine 45 LC two weeks ago for $264.02 out the door at my local gun shop.  These great deals are about to break me!  :D

Ya got any proof of that or is it just speculation? I suspect it's more likely "where" they're made, Hunan is a province in China, I got zero hits for an optics maker by that name.
