Weasel Box Question

I made some weasel boxes with ply wood and they have a 2 inch hole for access. I was wondering if I should drill some holes or cut an area and place some 1/4 inch screen in there so that the smell of the bait (meat) will be exposed to the air current through the box. Or is the hole enough to get his interest??

I used to trap a lot of weasels with boxes when I was a young fellow.  I never had any holes other than the entrance hole.  I would hang chicken or rabbit on a nail in the rear of the box, place a smear of my Weasel Super All Call near the bait and a little on the outside of the box underneath the lid overhang above the entrance hole.  I never had any problem getting the weasel's attention from reasonable distances.  Ace :-)

Asas'  info is good and i do about the same.  One   recommendation is to make sure your trap is secure enough to hold coon.  As with our warm winters coon are roaming  all the time and will take off with yr trap if not secured.  Most times yr box will be toothpicks but you will have a prime big coon  if yr trap holds him.  Alot of people  think you always need fresh bloody meat and that isnt so.  I use  fish also  and some yrs have used only fish and my catch  isnt any differant than with meat say beaver or muskrat.   Lenons weasel  lure  used by itself with just dry grass in box works good by itself also.

Yes RdFx, the weather sure has changed over the years with warmer Winters.  Never once in my first 50 years did I see a coon out and about here anytime during the Winter months.  I didn't even think of coons back when I trapped weasel big time.  I did have some boxes with a larger hole and a bigger trap to use near streams where mink sign was seen.  Several mink in the weasel sets sure upped the fur check from the old Maas & Steffen Fur Co.  You ever sell fur to Maas & Steffen RdFx?  Ace

P.S.  I like to sort of camoflage my boxes with spruce boughs, brush, snow or whatever with the box hole pointing in the direction of where i've seen weasel tracks or in the direction of the weasel's anticipated approach, so that the box hole is what is defined, not the box itself.  I do believe one can harvest a considerable number of weasel with the eye appeal and distinct visibility of the outstanding hole.  Visibility and eye appeal are two of the most important factors in trapping most animals.

Ace, I just got some of your Weasel All Call Lure in the mail, I'll be giving that a try. I won't drill any holes then, I'll use the hole as eye appeal, and the lure should help catch thier attention. Thanks guys!
