Well winters here.....
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:02:38 AM »
What are you guys doing to stay active?
Old uncle arthur always moves in with me around this time of year.
So going out in the woods becomes less of an option.

We had some nice weather Sunday, high in the 60's.
So I got out and did some casting.
Back got sore before I made enough.
Cast about 500 .357 148gr WC's.
Another 2-300 .357 158gr SWC's
Really need about 2-3000 more total.
Got a bunch of brass deprimed and resized.
I'll be reloading it while it's cold.

Figure I can reload when it's bad out, cast when it's nice.
Keeps me busy and not eating.......

What are you guys doing to fight cabin fever?

Well the other thing I failed to mention is I keep a couple project guns laying around also.
I haven't started on any of them yet, but as the cold gets colder I may have to.

Here's a pic of a couple of the bullets I did. Looks like both have a little bugger on them.
But they're just plinkers so I'll probably go ahead and load them up and fire away with them.
I generally cast a little harder than necessary. WW's plus some linotype.

Those look nice.

I have stayed so busy with family stuff.  I have squeezed in some reloading as time allows.  My limiting factor right now on how much I can load is I am testing loads in just about everything I got, so I load some test loads and wait on a chance to test.  The ones I am not working on, I worked up new loads for last year and spent the rest of the cold loading up a bunch.  I got to test a few loads today but none of them worked out.  Back to the drawing board.  I plan to get in some coyote hunting and some quail hunting as well this winter, just got to find time to go.

I spent a lot of time doing both of those before Uncle Arthur moved in. Back in the day I spent every moment I had out hunting something. Not so much anymore. Although yesterday and today are suppose to be pretty nice. Maybe up in the 60's. I think I'll try and get a little 22 plinking in this afternoon if I can slip away from work. I picked up a bunch of bowling pins last week and I've been dying to get out and scratch them up some. I did manage to squezze a little time in over the casting pot again yesterday. I'm still a couple thousand 148gr WC's away from having enough to load up next years supply of 38spl plinkers.

Well looking more like a little dusting now, let's hope.

I'll be heading back out to the reloading bench tomorrow.
Cabin fever is starting to push me a little to close to the edge.....

O.F. Later this winter my girl friend, golden retrievers and I are going to head south to Az. the across to Tx. and maybe hunt some hogs...I have never hunted in Okla...is there any hunting there in late Jan. or Feb... Have traveled though there a few times, beautiful country, and I remember Major Charles Askins describing it as a hunters heaven, BUT that was in the late 1800's...Still he moved there and lived much of his life in the state due the the wonderful shotgunning that was available in his time  He died in 1946 or 47, but his descriptions always made me think here is a jewel of a place....even though they are very old hunting tales....

I believe the Quail hunting season will still be going on.
In the past the NW part of the state offered the best populations.
Although they are present across the state.

Here's a link to the Oklahome Wildlife Department;

http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/

You can check it out before you plan on coming down this way.

Also there are huntable populations of wild piggies, mostly along the southern border with Tejas.

Right now, I'm working on a storage cabinet in my basement, between shovelling out after snowstorms.  We've got more of that coming in the next day or two.  When I'm not doing any of that, or reloading some ammo, or sizing some bullets I cast when the weather was warmer, I'm usually out and about, bitching about Gore and Global Warming to every shivering flatlander that I see out there.  You can tell them by the bumper stickers on their Subaru's, and by that liberal look in their eyes. They have no answer on days that the weather goes below zero--like this and the last few mornings.  I enjoy being a retired old geezer, mostly.

jlchucker one of my buddies is a bit of a tree hugger, but all in all he's pretty squared away.
Don't know if you get the okc tv channels but gary england on channel 9 has been calling poo poo on al gore for a couple years now. ;D

Much like you I tend to stay close to the fire in the winter.
My oldest grandson just came over and we're gonna go out and do a little reloading here in a bit.
I do enjoy my time with him.

There are a few decent tree huggers, and not all newbees are too bad.  We don't get the okc tv channels as far as I can tell.  I enjoy crapping on Gore most to leftist members of the legislature that I run into and to the ones with flagrant bumper stickers left over from the last election.  That works best when it's below zero.  Close to the fire is good, but sometimes I enjoy getting out on snowshoes--one of the best workouts going.  Too bad that rabbits around here are pretty much a memory.  We used to hunt them when I was a kid growing up.

Well the local kids pretty well hunted off everything years ago.
But over the past 5 or 6 years most of the little critters have came back.
Heck I've even had some deer in the front yard.

My grandson is about the right age to enjoy squirrel and rabbit hunting.
I also have a little farm about 10 miles from here we still do a little hunting on.
He's making planss for us to go down there and do a little crow plinking soon.

We've got plenty of crows around here but the law only allows shooting them during the months when they are gone. They seem to get bigger and bigger every year.  One now keeps landing on the cupola of my garage, and my little black cat Guenevere sits in the kitchen window looking at him.  She's an indoor cat, but I can tell she would definitely like to go out there and "play" with that crow.  Old Fart, it seems like rabbits are the last to come back around here.  Back when you and I were Young Farts, hunting rabbits in the winter--at least around here--was a big deal.  My uncles and grandfather used to go out every Sunday after church, and some of the rabbits they got were pretty big, judging by the pictures.  The dogs they used looked like big mongrel hounds, too--with beagle mixed in. Have a happy new year.

You know my wife's grandfather and her uncles used to hunt the fire out of those rabbits using beagles.
I always just enjoyed a nice walk in the woods with a 22 and a small back pack with lunch so I could make a day of it.
These days I still enjoy this, just like it when the temps are a tad bit higher.
My oldest g'son along with the younger ones will keep me hunting for another 10-20 years.
I'm looking forward to upcoming dove seasons, we just rework a little 410 double for him and then the others that follow.
It won't be long before he moves up to a 20 or 12 gauge. He's gung ho.

Here's hoping all you okies have a nice eve tonite and a happy and healthy new year.

Well with all this deep freeze we've been having I'm glad I got out and did some casting last month.

Seems each day I now have a routine or is a rut?.

Go home, check the mail, go in house and let the pup out of her pen, go out for a walk with her, head to the man cave, reload, wait until wife gets home and go in the house, eat, watch the boob tube, and hit the sack.

Man I dislike this weather. >:(

I started an action job on ny rossi m92 357 mag lever gun.  Wish I had done this when it was new.  I have not shot it to much but those burs in the action have done some damage already.  If I grab another this will be done right away. Can't believe the factory let it go full of metal shaving.  Any way going to slick up the action and lighten the trigger and put in a metal magazine follower.  I was going to plug the safety but I have found it to come in handy when teaching new shooters so I am going to leave it.

I have one one of those I bought way back when they first came out.
I don't know if it's different than yours, mine is a sr92.
I suspect they're the same. Never had any problems with mine.
It shoots both 38spl and 357mag. It's one of my favorite woods gun.
Super smooth action and a straight shooter. Never thought about parting with it.

Yours have a plastic magazine follower and a safety on top?  The new ones are made by Taurus as well, that alone about kept me form buying it, but glad I did.  I got the 24 in octagon barrel version and really have really liked that length.  We will see how this action job goes, but already having thoughts of getting a 45lc version (might get the Puma next time) and doing the same to it.  I have had a blast working on it so far.

I'll have to drag it out of the safe and see.
I bought back in the 80's I believe.
Ran a bunch of ammo through it.
I originally got it as a truck gun.
But I liked it so much it moved up the totem pole. :D
We were having problems with feral dogs on the farm.
I wanted something light and easy to handle I could stick behind the seat.
It didn't spend any time back there.......

Well it was a little wet out today so I reloaded a few 45-70 rounds today.
I traded for a Buffalo Classic a while back and I've been wanting to give it a try.
I loaded a couple different loads, both with 340gr cast bullets.
Two different powders and two different velocities.
I'm gonna try and slip over to T-Bird range tomorrow and give it a workout.
Depends on what the boss has planned after church.

Looks like monday is going to be nice also.
Day off for me, if tomorrow doesn't work out I'll head over there monday then.
I've worked up several different loads so far this winter and I'd like to try them out.

We finally got rid of the 13" of the white stuff here in the frozen Northeast of Oklahoma after 20 days. Not going to have to chop ice for the cows for a few days so I let the little woman talk me into a weekend trip to KC. I'll endure one day of shopping at Legends Mall as trade for a day at Cabelas. Its great to live in America where we can move about freely!

Boy ain't that the truth. Most of us okies are kind of a wandering breed.

I used to hate going shopping with my wife, anymore I don't mind it to much.
As long as it's not a regular thing. Usually do one long day at Christmas with her.
I've become a home body though. Everything I need and enjoy is here at one time or other.

Well here we are again recovering from another storm.
I spent last Thursday through Monday coupted up at home.
I don't know about you guys but I spent most of it out in the man cave.
Got a truckload of 38 spl loading done.
Managed to swap out scopes on a couple rifles and bore sight three.
I worked up a new load for my 257 bob.
Loaded up some 45-70.

Now what do we get but another possible storm headed our way. :(
Are you guys just not living right? ;D ::)

I just got back from changing out engines on a rig in North Dakota last Wednesday. It was long past cold up there we called the rig Ice Station Zebra. Temps were in the minuses and the winds gusted up to 50 mph visibility less than ten ft at times with snow and blowing snow.
It must have followed me home.
The ice took out my electricity last Thursday. We finally got it back on this evening at 4:00.
I was getting real tired of listening to the generator run if the juice hadn't come back on I was going get on the juice  ;D. Sunday the daughter's electric line was ripped out by a tree limb. It took out the weather head, meter can and ripped the wires out of the breaker box.
I spent all day installing a new breaker box and had to shanghai an electrician to get a new meter can from the electric company. Seems they want a licensed electrician to hook it all back up. I did all the work and the electrician looked it over and called the electric company to have the feed line reconnected. Nice guy it cost me 75 bucks and lunch.
My sons house is still out of electricity they say it may be down a another 10 days.
