??? on the Springfield Armory XD 40
« on: December 15, 2009, 03:30:23 PM »
I have no working knowledge of the XD 40 pistol and for that matter, have never owned or fired any arm in 40 S&W caliber.
I have been offered a brand new, never fired XD 40 complete with carrying case and assessories along with a half dozen boxes of Gold Dot 155 grain hollow points for a more than reasonable price.
Is this an arm worth owning? I'm not interested in a caliber report as I am well versed with the 40 S&W's
capabilities. You see, I've always been a 45ACP type of guy. Just not familiar with Springfield and their XD 40.
Any and all comments (Pro's and Con's) would be appreciated regarding this pistol.

Lotec,

Have you looked at the XDMs?  They seem to be significantly improved over the XDs.  I too am a 45 ACP guy.  I'm waiting for Springfied to offer an XDM in it.

Blessings!

I have two XDM 9's and am not a huge fan of the .40. I skip the .41 and move up to the .45 if I want something bigger. I really like the XDM. I no longer have the Glocks or S&W M&P.

The XD 40 is a fine pistol. If your getting it for a good price, go for it.

The Springfield XD is an excelent handgun.  The only improvement with the XDM is a match barrel, if it is for carry, I see no need for match.JMHO 8)

I need another shooter like I need a sharp stick in the eye, so I'm really not in the market to buy a new arm.  The deal that is offered to me is "almost" unresistable. If the XD is a desirable and reliable arm I'm interested.  For the most part I only have high end shooters in 45 ACP and have had no contact what so ever with the XD series. I do not handload for the 40 S&W at this time and it would take some motivation to start doing so.
All that I am wondering about is the quality, dependability, shootability and the opinions of those that have first hand experience with the XD.
I have been known to have changed my mind.
I thank you for your time and effort...

I guess I haven't owned one but I have sold and shot them, my best friend has one ,(all his other guns are Kimber), he likes it.  What more you need? 8)

Quality, reliability and shootability should not be an issue with the XD, they have a very good reputation in all these areas.  If the deal is as good as you imply you could always pick it up and use it for trading stock sometime down the road, they hold their value well.  But I think you will find it to be a keeper once you've had some range time with it.  ;)

p.s.; If you decide to pass on it and the seller lives in NC I'ld be interested.

Lotec,

If you are not accustomed to firing striker fired handguns, it may take a bit of familiarization, but I learned to like it a lot. As to motivation to loading the .40 - a set of dies, some brass and bullets? Not a big investment.

Bret pretty well sumed up what I had been thinking. I normally do not look a gift horse in the mouth as I have this time. The old saying if something appears to be to good to be true, it probably is. That was what had been going through my mind. Evidently in this case that statement is not true. I did not expect what was to happen.
An elderly gent bought it on a whim six years ago and has decided that it was something that he personally had second thoughts about and he was not comfortable owning it. Never owned a gun before. He asked me if I was interested in having it.  I was WOWED! today when I stopped over to his home.  Merry Christmas and now it's mine. That fellow thinks more of me than I thought he did. GOOD ON ME!
End of story!
Thanks to every one!!!

To late Brett! I'm thinking that it's a keeper now. I'm going to give it a shot so to speak.  It's nice to find that one has more than one friend in this old world. Even if it was an unsuspected one!
Blessings to you my friend! May you find such a man...

I own more than a few handguns.  I am a 45 / 1911 guy when I'm not shooting a large cal revolver or single shot.  I have an 9mm XDM, purchased for my 11 yr old son to learn on.  It is without a doubt one of the best guns in it's price range made today.  If you are getting a good price on it.  DO IT....

I have a 40 in the XDm.  And although there are a significant number of improvements in the m series the XD is a gun your going to love as well as the 40.  I've been reloading for it since day 1 and it shoots like a dream.  I know the 45 guys knock the 40 but it is a great round with plenty of stopping power if that's what your concerned about.
