new deer and moose gun

at the moment I shoot a .243 winchester and a .303 British and I am looking at upgrading to a larger calibre that I can use on both deer and moose. I probably well do more deer hunting than anything with it but I also want to know that if I do go for moose elk or black bear that I well be packing enough gun that I can shoot out to the 300-400 yard range. I am think about either the TC venture or a savage in 7mm mag or 300win mag. just wanted to know what you thought would be better the 7 or the 300

either one you have can do 400 yards for deer. for a moose, i would think a 300 or 338 would be better.

 No need to over-do it. Would your hunting be 80% deer & 20% moose or so? I'd look to the 30-06 or similar, something 30 cal anyway.

Not a big difference between the two, really.  What is more important is not having a gun that recoils so hard that it makes bullet placement difficult.  The key to either caliber is to use the right bullet.  Todays modern, controlled expansion bullets, in high velocity rifles, is really like a caliber up-grade.  These bullets allow a high velocity round to perform without bullet break-up, and poor penetration.  No moose is going to walk away from a 160 grain Barns TXS out of a 7mm at about 2900 - 3ooo fps. thru the lungs.   A 180 grain .30 cal. at about the same speed is just icing on the cake.  I have shot one moose, with a .35 cal 250 grn Nosler, at about 2300 fps.  One shot, worked perfect.

  But in case your at a stand-still, go with an 06.

303 with hornady light mag loads is comparable to the 06. Lot's of moose are killed in Canada using 303 and 202gr mil spec soft points (I think they are called k-bullets).

My vote is the 06. it's cheaper to shoot and plenty of gun for moose/deer.

Also, 100 - 200 yards are the most common encountered ranges for most big game. You may be able to soot 1/4 mile, but that's not the same as hunting 1/4 mile. there's only a few places in the world that warrant that type of shooting, and usualy pronghorn or mountain goat/sheep is attatched to the lisc. You really don't need 300WM, it's overbore offers little practical advantage. I know, I've owned one for 16 years and there was nothing that it did better than my 06 did.

You really have all the gun you need. The 303, as already stated, is a fine moose gun. Buy some bullets and practice with it at the ranges you think you will shoot.

Then again I know guys that shoot their moose with a 243.
