I just purchased a Stevens 200, in 7mm08 here at Academy Sporting Goods in Joplin,Missouri. They have then on sale for $199 and then if you fill out a credit application you get $50 off! I got this for $161 out the door. I don't need it but for that? Heck you can't buy a action for that. Should be a nice gun for hunting in bad weather. I hate taking a $1000 rifle out in the rain. Thought some of you others might be interested.

I started to buy a used 200 in.223 last week for $325 ( with a scope ), Thats a good deal, I cant find a used one for that kinda $$$.

The Stevens are basically the Savage with very little attention ot cosmetics. The stocks I've seen suck, but they are easily replaced.

From what I've heard they shoot as well as the older Savage rifles, one of which I was the happy owner.

Congrats, that is a heck of a deal - in a great deer cartridge, too!

Saw the academy ad for the Stevens 200 in Houston newspaper this week for that price. It was extremely tempting but I managed to resist visiting the closest Academy. Have a couple of other rifle projects I'm thinking about.

Stevens is still made by Savage. I don't know about the new ones but the old ones were built on the Savage 110 action. That action isn't the prettiest thing around but it's one of the strongest. I built a .308 NM on one of those 110 actions. That .308 Norma Mag is one of the most accurate guns I've ever built and I don't intend to part with it. I have another 110 action sitting in my shop and I wouldn't sell it for what you paid for that whole rifle. You got a great deal on that rifle and it should serve you well.

Mounted a scope on it, Cleaned the barrel good with JB's. I took it to the range yesterday and fired a 3/4 inch group first three rounds. I already had a 25.06. For the money, these guns really shoot well.

Academy here in Texas had the same deal, 199 bucks, All they offered was 7-08 and 270. I got 1 of each !, I've had the opportunity to shoot them both now, and they are very accurate. Both rifles will do under an inch, Out shoot most of my untuned Remingtons, as accurate as my A bolts.

Just for a update... I have had the oppurtunity to shoot several different handloads thru this rifle. I get more amazed everytime I shoot it. I adjusted the trigger is the only modification I have done to it. I have several different loads that get down to 1/2 half inch. I fired some 120 grain Sierra's over some 4350 and it was basically a single big hole. Just can't believe the accuracy for a inexpensive rifle.

I'm not much surprised at all - the Savage design is known for accuracy. The question I would have had is the effect of Steven's rather flimsy synthetic stocks on accuracy. I aasume that is what is on your rifle rather than wood?

I'm surprised those stocks don't have a greater affect on group size.

Still, for the price, they are really a great value. Especially when they shoot like yours.

Most folks rasp out the barrel channel enough that the stock doesn't flex enough to touch the barrel. With the pillar bedding you are fine.

That seems like a fair price for a Savage/Stevens rifle.
