Weathered horse manure draws fox
« on: October 24, 2003, 03:49:47 PM »
For the past few days, friends of mine have watched two fox enter their pasture and go from weathered pile to pile of old horse poop. The fox scratch thru and dig for mice. Does this bring to mind any ideas for some sort of creative set  to fool the fur bearers? I was thinking a flat set with a covering of transplanted horse poop and a mouse (maybe some lure) for bait. But...not sure how to get the fox to step on the pan! I'm still a rookie, any old pros out there tried anything like this?

I'd bet the fox are "mousing" for insects instead of mice...I use a LOT of horse/cow pies for backing on my fox/coyote trapping...A LOT...nothing more natural and easier placed than a cow pie in a field the cows have been in...make it work for you...$$$$ in the bank!!!

As far as bait you can use anything, or use gland lure .  Ive used horse, cow manure (dried and crumbly) for trap covering  for many years and works good.   WIth the horse manure you can use   horse apples    placed like you would rocks to get fox to step where you want . Also keep area over pan lower  than rest of area and canine will step there

I use Burro apples or oranges what ever they'er called.  I mosly use gland lures or urine but have on occasion put a little dab of lure under a pie etc, works good for me.

Hey guys, THANKS for the replies! Because I'm still a greenhorn,I need to ask a couple of dumb questions  When you say use a pile o poop for backing, is that for a dirt hole or flat set or both? And does it work to carry in "meadow muffins" to an area that doesn't normally have them?

You can use feces, poop, meadow muffins in what ever set you want as a backing, foot guide ect.   Also you can use your own pets (cats, dogs) feces, urine if you run short  during the trap line season....  As far as using meadow muffins in areas not inhabited by Meadow Muffin producers, yes no problem.  This would probably  be  in catagory of curiosity lure   at least differant  fm what is usually found in that area.   Remember alot of animal lures  used are from animals not even found in  places where we trap.  For instance yrs ago  lure makers used ambergris which comes fm whales (now a synthetic substance).  Now how many canines are found at bottom of ocean???   :>)
