Wolves in town, Newberry.

I was talking with M.J. Pike at Dukes Sporting goods yesterday.  Evidently someone in town, a block from the school had a "wolf" in the yard.  Several dogs and cats are missing in the area.  Interesting.  I don't know how well documented this tale is.

I do Know, a couple of years ago, on a Sunday morning, a group of guys were golfing at Newberry Country Club when a wolf emerged carrying a fawn.  They threw golf balls at it and drove it off, but could not save the fawn.  That story is factual.  The golf course is right across the street from the DNR Newberry District Office

I'm not surprised. Newberry is the Moose capital of Michigan and the wolves were there to finish off the Moose calves. Now that the wolves have killed all the deer, elk, and moose, they are still hungry and want to eat our children. Well, perhaps my assessment isn't exactly spot on, but that's the way it feels lately when I hear or read the word "wolf."

I think your assessment IS spot on Skunk.

I fear it's only a matter of time before a child is attacked.  I hope it never happens, but the wolf population continues to go up and up and they keep getting bolder and bolder.

Wouldn't be the first time an XL coyote was shot in the UP.

I think if I still lived in the mitten I would be taking some trips to practice target shooting with the bow.   Are crossbows still illegal there?

buddy who lives in shingleton lost a pup last winter and there were wolve tracks all over the place. Hate to say it but its going to take a child getting killed by one to open up the eyes of people.

No, crossbow's are legal under some age or disability and time and district limitations.

i spent the first week of deer season this year, near Rock. the wolves were out every nite. one hunter even claims he saw one running some deer in a field south of town. my wife's sister lives in Newberry and her husband claims they are all over the area.

The feds need to de-list these critters quickly. They are becoming a huge problem for pet owners, hunters, and farmers in the UP. I live in Wetmore, and a neighbor lost their dog to a couple of wolves this fall. The story is that the wolves came into the yard, snatched up the dog and took off, with the dog's owners outside watching the whole thing. We have several wolves around here, and it makes you think twice before you let the kids go outside to play.

I wonder how much damage a wolf pack can do to a deer herd that is up to its knees in snow (and congregated in a cedar swamp!). And once that damage is done, what do the wolves eat next?

i see a couple days ago a wolf killed a beagle that some guys were rabbit hunting with on the seney stretch.

Lloyd, that's where Patty and I saw our first Michigan wolves about 12 or 15 years ago coming back from Marquette at about 4 in the afternoon.  They crossed M- 28 going south between us and the car in front of us.  I had time to slow down and stop.  The first kept going down a 2 track, but the second crossed the ditch and turned and looked at us for a few seconds before he followed the first.

I lost a young beagle to coyotes during haying a few years back, and a friend, Ron Harder in Gulliver lost one to wolves a couple of years ago.  Dragged the dead dog and its dog house halfway down the driveway.

tell you what pal. My dog is as close to me and as important as my children (hes been alot less trouble!!) If a coyote or a wolf even put a scratch on him id spend the rest of my life with one single minded persuit. Id kill everyone of those sobs i could hunt up!!

Thats funny because everytime I take the beagle to the swamp I think the same thing.  My dog has ran back to me (How and the heck she knows where I am is beyond me) like a bullet strait to me and sits between my legs with her hair straight up and pissed!! Im sure it was coyotes that she ran into, but the thought of a wolf hurtin my sweetheart makes me want to start that life pursuit anyway!!!  Maybe someday when the powers that be pull their heads out of their behinds wolves may "fear the sound" of dogs again------because then they may know who the dogs hang around with...
