found a cheapie 20ga.
« on: December 17, 2009, 12:26:10 PM »
My brother wanted to stop at a gun shop near where we work on the way home today, and there on the used rack was a neglected looking H&R 088 in 20ga. It was missing the buttplate and has a blonde forearm but wasn't rusty. $65.
  Now I need a 16, a 28, and a 22mag.

Add a grind to fit Limbsaver and refinish the wood and you're all set. That's a good find. ;D

The guy at the shop handed me a box of used take-off and oddball pads and told me "If you see anything in there that you can make work take it too" So I grabbed a hard rubber 1" pad that I can grind to fit after I fix the wood. I'm thinking of going with a semi-gloss black like the old topper deluxes had.

Strip it down to bare wood and see what kind of grain it has. You might be surprised to find some good looking wood under the nasty stain. ;)
I have a couple that I stripped and put a boiled linseed finish on without staining. They look amazing.

I didn't mention it in the earlier post but the butstock has some damage near the bottom (heel?). It looks like mabye a puppy chewed on it some. I think till I get it smoothed out with wood filler I'm gonna need paint.

A properly installed recoil pad might eliminate the damage at the heel.

I'd hafta cut about an 1 1/2" from the length of the buttstock to eliminate the damage.

I think that's what Swampy is talking about. If you cut the stock down then install the pad it'll get you back to the correct length of pull. If you need to cut off 1.5" to get rid of the damage you can add the 1" pad and be within a half inch of what it was. Take the time and fit the pad properly and refinish the set and you'll have a nice looking gun. ;)
I think the 20ga. Pardner is the best all around woods gun.

Brain fart... I get what you're saying now. I've added pads to my N.E.F.'s before but I've never cut one to add a pad. I've got long arms and adding to the factory stock makes them nice for me.

Slipover pad might cover the damage. Run a couple screws into it to keep it on.

Based on a recent experience, I'd say buy it. Two weeks ago I took the reliable old 30-30 barrel off my Topper frame and replaced it with a smooth bore modified choke 22 inch 20 gauge I had laying around. Had a weaver rail put on it years ago but never really used it for anything other than a cheap red dot for the occasional turkey. Anyway, living in New York but getting the chance to go to Ohio this year, I threw a decent Bushnell 3x9 on it. Light as the rig is, I was bruised and done after a dozen bench shots. Although all over the place at 100 yards with Remington Sluggers, I was "minute of softball" at 50. Which came in handy when this 9 point followed a nice but much smaller 10 point straight down the hill toward me on the last day of the trip.  65 yards out, I hit him where I had the crosshairs which was right on the chest curl and straight thru the heart.  Trust me - I'm not a good enough marksman with a rifle let alone a shotgun that I'm bragging about the shot. Rather; it's just to say that that old topper barrel threw that slug where I was hoping it would go and the biggest buck I ever personally saw in the woods fell to the ground. Given that I've been invited to go back next year - I think I might just treat that old barrel with a bit more respect and see what it does with a few different brands of slugs.    Meanwhile; lucky enough that my buck posed for a trail cam pic - I thought I'd send that along too.

Nice buck! I have a 22" 20ga barrel on the way that's going to get fitted to an SB2 frame I have. I will have a weaver #62 scope rail mounted and this will become my smooth bore slug gun. I have a 2X tru Glo red dot on my Tracker II 20ga and really like it so I will probably put one of those on this. They are nice because they are short and sit in front of the hammer so you don't need a hammer spur.

Way to go 30-30fan. I've never had a shot at a buck that big. I did buy the 20ga, well, I gave them a 20 to hold it. I'll get back there (hopefully) before CHRISTmas to pick it up.

I used an H&R 20GA to take this decent 4pt this yr,also in NY. These 20's must draw the deer in somehow. He came from a heavy stand of pines about 75 yds away and just kept working his way towards me.I stayed still ,and at about 15 yds finaly took the shot. The 5/8 oz Remington slugger did the rest.DRT.

Yep you can't beat the 20 ga. on deer. Mine is good out to 75 yds. with a Bushnell Banner scope/ Remmington Sluggers/full choke, and I took a nice mature doe with it this year in Ohio.  Don't mind the target shooting with it either, much nicer than either of my 12 ga. for slugs.

I had a 12 gauge Tracker ll I traded away and bought a 20 guage Tracker ll before the season and I really like that 20.    I took two deer with it this year one at 40 yards athe other at 65, and they didn't go far and a heavy blood trail.

That 12 gauge I couldn't get confidence in because I didn't care to shoot it enough to group because it was so brutal, but the 20 gauge I could shoot all day.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I brought my "new" 20ga home today. It is an AZ ser. 3" chambering and has a silver colored bead. Looks like someone cut the stock down a little bit, mabye 1/2" if that. I'll try to post some pics when I get time.

jimbo47 what are you shooting in yours? My tracker II 20ga really likes the lightfields 3 holes touching at 65 yards.

Some progress on my new project. I was stoning some scratches out of the barrel when I noticed the muzzle looked to have been cut. I measured the barrel at 24 3/4". I don't know if that is a standard length or not. My calipers read .621" at the muzzle and the barrel is marked "full" does that sound right?
I cut a bit of the stock off to get rid of some damage and used a stainable wood filler on some of the remaining chips and tooth marks. Hopefully I can make it look good enough to go with an oil finish but if I don't like the looks of it I'll go with a satin black.
I took a couple pictures but my wife said they wouldn't load onto the computer. Mabye after CHRISTmas we'll figure out whats wrong with that.
I have a factory H&R buttplate that Carbineman sent me that I won't be able to use on this project. If anyone needs it shoot me a PM.

I'm shooting the Remington Buckhammers with near those results, but it's probably me, more than the ammo!   They do the job though!

My 22" 20ga mod barrel arrived today going to have to do some fitting, but the project is started.

I've got a 20 gauge smooth bore modified Topper barrel, I bought before I got the Tracker ll, and I mounted it on another frame as my walk around woods gun.   Thought about mounting a scope rail that I've got, but then I've already got the tracker ll with the scope, and I don't have to be too careful handling this gun.   I shot it the other day with some Remington sluggers and they shot a pretty nice group just using the bead front sight at 45 yards, so that will work for me.    A couple of slugs and a pocket full of 6's or 7 1/2's and I've got a pretty versatile, and light weight woods gun for after deer season.  Dove and quail season is still on for a while, since I'm about done with the deer hunting this year.

You could likely fix up that butt with a new plate/pad and a disc sander. Install the plate/pad and sane BOTH at the same time. With the plate/pad on the stock. Keep the lines even one side to the other and don't let to toe get sharp, keep it round and you should get a good looking stock!! Then finish the remainder as Spanky suggested..

I've got it all fixed up already.... I steamed out the dents, cut off some toe, used a bit of stainable wood filler and finished with walnut stain and 4 days worth of boiled linseed oil rubbed in with steel wool.
