« on: December 17, 2009, 02:34:07 PM »
thought  that  woud  get  you  to look

seems  like  a lot fo threads  intending  to sway  HnR

so  i was day  dreaming  and thought i would start  one

design  the  perfect handi  propriatory  round

.357  H&R handi  max

it  would  be   a  357  mag/max    only  longer
will  shoot  38spl  357 mag  357 max  and  of corse  357 H&R MAX
H&R  MAX  will  exceed  the   35 rem   but  probly won't  out do the  35 whelen

it will be available in
thumb hole stock  and stailess  scpoce ready
the  long  buffalo clasic
and the standard  22  with sights
and  a scope ready  standard  too

just  day  dreaming
sorry if you got your  hopes  up
got  any other suggestions
you are  limited by  your imagination

and the pressur limits  of the handi action
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

How about a 45 Longer Colt? Shoot long colt and longer, say a 1/4" longer cartridge?

How about a proprietery magnum rifle cartridge. They could design a frame for the round that would handle the pressure of magnum loadings. I think if they would do that then there wouldbe enough interest in the cartridge that they could start producing Magnum Handi Frames. Then we could have our handi rifles in magnums as well. The new frame should be designed to accept barrels chambered in magnum calibers only. That way so there will no chance of a standard SB1 or SB2 frame having a magnum chambering on it for safety reasons.

Just wishfull thinking I know. But it could be possible if H&R would put there minds to it.

As much as I like having a plethora of calibers (I got that covered +++) in reality most offerings are simply covering old ground. In reality the 22LR, 30-06 and 12 gauge could do everything you ever reasonably needed to do on the North American continent. OK, I freely admit verity is the spice of life and will go back to reloading the other 14 + calibers that I labor over.............  ;D

Don't think they'd do the stronger action, too expensive, but an extended version of a pistol cartridge would not be expensive to produce....other than a brass manufacturer....

I hate to sound rude but why re-invent the wheel?  There is a cartridge available for everything.  A gun that can shoot that many different loads would have to be re-sighted every time you decided to shoot something.  Why not just have another gun set up in a different caliber?

Ah the beauty of a round designed for iron sights.  I can swap loads in my 45-70 and know the shift I have to make in the sights whne I do it, cause I don't use a scope.  So make a cartridge that is designed for that only with modern tolerances for pressures.

Along the same lines as some of the other suggestions, I would like to see a substantially extended 22lr.  Extend it enough to get close to 22wmr speeds.  That would allow shorts, long, lr's, and the 22handimag.  I think that would pretty much surpass the 22 mag in usefullness and versetility.

I am thinking a 45-70 necked down to 38.  Then you could just rechamber the 357 barrel or the factory could do it on a new one.  Larry

Have already mapped out the 460 S&W family:

460 Special - 1.350, 460 Magnum - 1.475, 460 Magnum+ - 1.591, 460 S&W Magnum - 1.800.

Uses the same progression as the 357 and 44 families.

You can apply the same "family" approach to the 500 S&W Mag, so you have a wide range of loads available.

Obviously too much time on my hands.

I was thinking close to the same, except on the 444 marlin case, with 225gr accubond. The 45-70 would hold more im guessing, slightly more than the 350 rem mag. Call it the "358 H&R". Now question is would it work?

Along these same lines I have a craving for a 33 WCF but the 45-70 necked down to 38 would be awful nice too and bullet availability is much better., and this is do-able right now by rechambering a 357.... all it takes is $$$$  :(

45-70 - I also thought of a 357 "Long". Maybe a 2.00" or 2.25" case. I think it would be a great round in the Handi. Now if we could get Starline to make the brass and get a reamer made....

Why neck down a 45-70? There have been many 444 Marlins mods necked down to many different calibers. I think the JDJ series are based on the 444 Marlin along with many others. Is the case on the 444 is thicker than a 45-70 and the case is slightly smaller in diameter so it will handle heavier pressures better than a 45-70 necked down? There must be a good reason that all those mods are based on a 444 and not a 45-70. While we are wishing how about a 375 Winchester? Or a 375 Winchester necked down to 357? I really like the idea of a 357 Long.

in a rifle you can easily beat 35 remington factory loads with a good 357 max handload.  Of course if you hand load the 35 also, you can get more than factory.  I have a 358 JDJ based on the 444 case, it is an excellent round.  If you need to go above the 357 max, I'd go for the JDJ, I don't think stretching out the max longer offers you enough gain in case size to get into slower powders the will really bring the velocity gains you might want.  I'm not a ballistician, but I have done a lot of experiements with the 357 max in a strong rifle and know it does more than many know it can, especially when mated with 180 grain pointed SSP bullets, or LBT gas check cast designs.

How about 41 mag and a longer version 41cal on a necked up 375 Winchester case? Also..one Winchester worked on but never brought out...the 400 Winchester..using the .400diameter 40S&W bullet on the same 375 Winchester case..One last one...I would love to see a 32 H&R magnum...I think that would be pretty cool...

Mac we are kinda on the same page .I already got my Handi .32 H&R mag but have a pipe dream for quite some time on the .41. But since I got my .45BC Carbine that has gone away some and now I am trying to decide on a companion .45 Colt Revolver. Kurt

There are a bunch of 45-70 "wildcats"! The reason the JDJ is based on the .444 is to make it safe in the Contender, pressures would need to be less to user the bigger case head of the 45-70. Ruger level pressure levels up to 55kpsi far exceed the .444, so case construction isn't the issue.

41 maximum.

[edit] It would fire 41 magnum pistol ammunition, but also a proprietary H&R round that would be a lengthened 41 mag. How long? I don't know.... how long can you go?

41 maximum.

or  did  you  mean   .41 H&R MAX
i  thought of  that  to  probly  a better  round
few  people  shoot  the 41  compared to  357  or  44

44  rejected  as  there  is  a  445 super mag  and  the 444
45  rejected  because  we  have  the  460   S&W  and  45-70
50  rejected  because  it  sure  doesnt  need  any more  power
375  has always  intriqued  me
405  H&R MAGNUM      lengthend  405 win  but  will still  handle  the  405  win

to  truely  be  HANDI   it  should be  able  to  use  your  hand  gun  ammo
[  atleast  have  a non-proprietory  back  up  ]

357  was  the  one i chose  also  based on the popularity  of  the  357 max  and  how  it  can  srand  more  power

i  did  like the suggestion
and  never  thought about  the   .22  super long H&R rim fire
that also  handles  shorts longs  andlong rifles

While we are all daydreaming here, I have always been partial to the 450 Marlin, I was sorry when it was dropped from the H&R line up, But how about a 450 Marlin necked down to .375, or .35.  I think that would be a pretty sweet bear rifle.
Just dreaming here a little.
