The other item that went in the package is the ammo chest.  It had room for 24 blank cartridges, a vertical hole for each one.  It only had 12 cartridges left when I got it, and 10 when I sold it.  Strangely one of the-brass cartridges was fitted with a steel .45-70 rifled barrel insert.  That's one of the two that fell out of the box before I sold the rig.

You have mentioned before, how when you see an item that you've just got to have, that you'll sell or trade some ordnance in order to get it, so just out of curiosity; do you recall if it was some other artillery piece that enticed you to get rid of this Strong? All I know, is that if I had this cannon, it would take something very special to make me part with it.

I think I've posted a pic of your limber on this forum before, it was also on the N-SSA forum, which if I recall correctly is where I saved it from. Excellent workmanship, you did a beautiful job on it.

I have a limber chest sitting in my living room.  I have about 125 hours in it and I like just looking at it.

A Spanish 8-pounder Gribeauval tube came along; had been painted long ago so bronze was like new when the paint was removed.  I had to have it.  Tube weighs about 1300 Spanish lbs. as I recall, octagonal cross-section, plain dolphin handles.  I can't recall its name offhand, but I can get it, and some pix eventually.  I think I bought it just before I got a digital camera, so pix are still in photographic print format.  There are a few identical tubes at the Washington Navy Yard (but theirs are heavily corroded of course!)

I know this game very well  ,not at the cannon level but when I think back I miss nearly every gun I've ever sold ..........  and regret most to this day .

I still have it, and by a strange coincidence, really too long a story, I wound up with original Spanish carriage irons, axle, el screw for it, the only such set I've ever seen and it came my way.  When I grow up and have money and stuff I'll have someone build a carriage for the 8 pounder using those irons.  And of course I want to shoot the 8-pounder, I already have a ball mold I had made for it.  I'll adapt it to a carriage I already have to shoot it so I don't have to wait years until I finally get a proper carriage.

I don't think I'll get rid of any Spanish tubes, I like 'em and I guess you could say that's my major sub-collection.   I still have a lot to learn about them, which is part of my reason for co-founding the SARA group.

The subject you brought up latley ,Spanish Guns cast in Mexico and parts unknown ,interests me ,but some of those Spanish Mortars .....    "El Diablo" or ....... worse .....

Copper ,tin , powder ,iron for shot , casting ,teaching ....yikes !
The usable but abit off center casting or the bore that points a smidge to the left kinda remind me of Kyber Pass Enfields.

I was making the assumption that if that was in fact the reason for parting with the Strong, that it was something extra-special that triggered the move.
