.500 S&W Rifles
« on: December 17, 2009, 05:43:20 AM »

Im in Australia and we don't have the .500S&W as standard in anything and no-one has done a gun in it as a gunsmith yet. But we have a proliferation of both the types of animals you'd likely shoot with it such as wild boar, wild cattle, horses and donkeys.

Of course we have the 44, 444 and 45/70 in std firearms but I fell the .500 is going to prove a winner and I have been searching for rifles to import to Australia.

I was going to go with Towner but they went belly up after 6 months work with Scot to make an Australian spec gun. Has anyone there had a Towner and what did they think of it Especially if they have a Remington 7615 or 7600 to compare too.

Now I see a gun released by Big Horn. Has anyone had it and tried it out? Whats the action like compared to a Marlin since they are the current yardstick for that type of appearance and action?

Cheers guys

Gavin

I had heard that Wild West Guns up in Alaska was going to bring out a 500 lever gun.  I think the barrel options were to be 16.5 and 18 inches.  Proposed price was $1500 U.S., though.  GNC milled receiver.  Awesome looking promo photos (?) that I saw.  I don't know the status, however.

Here's a thread on the Bighorn in the Lever Action forum.

I emailed WW Guns about that .500 LeverGun prototype and they told me that it was still in the prototype stage.  From what I have been reading they have been prototyping that gun for quite a while now.

But all that aside, I would LOVE to have one.

I kinda like the looks of the Big Horn Armory Carbine.  It looks cool.  I just would like the WW Guns version because of the photos I have seen, it was side eject.  Which I would really like.  Not a fan of the top eject.

Although I already own a .500 S&W Encore, I'd still like a lever action .500 to go with it.  I've emailed both WWG and Big Horn to see if either are available yet, we will see who wants my money. ;D

Yeah, I've though about the .45-70, but I'm already set up for reloading .500 S&W.

Initially I had though that I could use .451 bullets which I already have (.45LC and .460) for the .45-70, but once I figured out it used the larger .458 bullets, then I'd need to buy shell plates, dies, brass, bullets, etc. which would eat up some of the savings.

Plus that half inch bore is pretty cool. ::)

As per their email, Wild West told me the same thing-still at the prototype stage with no ETA for the release.

I'm sure I'll end up buying a Handi rifle at some point since they are cheap, but really would like a .500 repeater.  Ruger No 1 is nice, but I wish they still sold the stainless laminate models.

My 1st thought when I saw the 500 at the S&W booth at SHOT when the introduced it was "This will be great in a lever rifle".  A little shorter than the 45-70, maybe even get another round into the tube.  Lever guns were designed to shoot rounds much like the 500's external dimensions in past years, so one strong enought for the new round is just plain going to be made.  Since NEF is making rifles, and Marlin and NEF are owned by the same parent company, I have been waiting to see the press release announcing the obvious development.

I doubt I will make the jump to buying into the 500S&W myself.  I don't really want a pistol that painful to shoot and I already have 45-70 for my large bore rifle needs.  If I wasn't already invested in the 45-70 and in 44mag, I can see how the 500 makes an atractive option.

I hope you can interest some one in importing them.  Australia needs some good news in the world of guns.  Heck, we all need good gun news ;).

Big Horn Armory is not producing the .500 lever either yet as per their email.

Guess I'll have to wait for a .500 lever.

BHA is in .500 S&W levergun production as we speak.

Their levergun is the Model 89, is available in either rifle or carbine form in blued carbon steel or stainless at the same MSRP.

It is a newly-designed rifle, a cross between a Winchester Model 1886 and a Winchester Model 92 in both size & design - as seen last week at S.H.O.T.
