I think that rugers redhawk should be on the list somewhere, they are very durable guns ive never had any issues with them, triggers sometime need a little work other than that redhawk would be my choice Ron

BEST means just that , best trigger , best bbl , best lock work , best metal and best other stuff like fitting the hand , ejecting spent cases , springs that don't break , timming that stays in time , and BEST SIGHTS . No gun is best at all of them - your pet or mine . So lets see best bbl - Python , grips -S&W , lock work for strength Ruger , trigger - before work S&W or Colt , best metal - for strength - Ruger , Fit the hand - your choice , springs - Ruger or S&W , Case ejection - Ruger , Timming - Ruger it will take a beating , Sights -Colt . These are my opinion .
All that said I like J frames in small guns , 686 - 586 , GP 100 and security sixes in med frame and Redhawk in large frame .

From my experiences;

My new python from the 70's had cylinder timing problems but i could hit small rocks on the berm at 100yds with my speer 140JHP reloads. The cylinder didn't loc up until i pulled the trigger.

With S&W's they black marketed the model 29 in 44mag during the dirty harry movies so they made more money on them. I refuse to own any S&W products. Only there salesmans had and sold the 29's at out ragious prices.

My ruger security six's and my redhawks have been flawless. I just lube them with moly to smooth them out. I never had a problem with my ruger security six's since the 70's.

I just went to Texas to help a friend out. We had some spare time so we went to the range . We shot his Python , S&W and my Ruger and S&W . His Colt and my Ruger were both 6 inch guns . At 25 yards both guns shot about the same off hand no rest. The Colt has style the Ruger has strength .

I carry a model 60 and an SP 101 but I like my 686

I like the trimmer lines of the older 66 too

since I have gotten a little older I wish all my stainless guns were blue though.

I have owned a lot of S&W, Colt, Dan Wesson and Ruger DA revolvers and they all have good and bad points. If I had to pick one that had the least bad points and the most good ones I would have to pick the K frame S&W in any configureation (10,13, 15, 19 and there SS versions). This is THE CLASSIC DA revolver. They are light handy durable and shoot well. For something more modern and more durable I would pick either a Ruger security Six or GP 100. Now if I was talking about a hunting pistol for big game that would be the Ruger Red Hawk only becasue S&W N frams do not fit my little hands.

+1 at least for me. I aslo like the Ruger Security/Service/Police Six Models. Though I've never owned one, I have shot some S&W revolvers and they were all very smooth, as was the Colt Trooper MK III I had years ago. I know that any revolver can be smoothed in function but for out of the box ruggedness I do like the GP-100s. This is especially true, when shooting high velocity ammo like the Buffalo Bore 357 Mag ammo. Yes, the GP-100s are heavy but that helps in reducing recoil. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about my GP-100 shooting loose. Like I said, this is my opinion only and given the OP's original question, it is a wide open field.

W/O a doubt the Dan Wesson's and I have had Ruger revolvers and still have a couple of S&W's and there has never been their equal from the two mfg's mention, wish there was for all us shooters. Looking forward with much hope to the DW 357 coming back next year, but trying not to get high hopes just in case it does not happen.

Here is my two, a 1959 Standard & 1984 Mk II Standard, I can tell them apart in the dark. Can you tell what's different other the magazine but plate? Both bolts are jeweled and had recoil & firing pin springs replaced, and Volequartsen extracors installed. They both are relative low round count, with older one with about 2 or 3 bricks at most fired and the Mk II Standard with 3 boxes or less shot. I do have a 96/22 WMR has less then 100 rounds fired.

My DW with 8" barrel with scope installed, will have to do a pic of it with 6" barrel installed this week.

And my favorite shooter, a 1978 model 15 357 magnum. The 6" barrel now sports a nice scope. Need to do new picture here too.

Over the years I have owned a ton of handguns both revolvers and semi autos and my very favorite ones are No.1 Ruger Security Six four inch, No 2 Ruger Security Six 6 inch, S&W Model 10 4" heavy barrel, S&W Model 10 light barrel, Webly in 45ACP, and Ruger Red Hawk 44 mag 6 or 7 inch. Others come and go but these stay with me always.

Ain't that the truth, this one has about 1.5 lb trigger in SA 6 maybe in DA and has never been to the gun smith.

Here it is with a N frame S&W 610-3 (10 mm) and look how small the N fram looks compared to the DW. The S&W has been buffed and trigger tweaked by S&W and is very nice for a S&W, but can't compare to the DW trigger or accuracy.

Has an adjustable front sight.
1-4 Settings
Set the sight for the distance you want. I have them set for 50 Yard, 75 Yards, 100, Yards and 200 Yards.
with the 158 grain JSP by Federal.
The trigger job was done by the custom shop.
It is smooth and silky.

Come to find out old Wesson didn't think their customers were smart enough to align two holes in the barrel with two holes in the shroud. They put holes all the way around the barrel insted. The guy that had it before me didn't read the part about only using jacketed in the ported barrel and soldered the barrel to the shroud. Haven't owned a Dan Wesson since.

I hate to tell you but they were never made with holes drilled all around the barrel, and my ported barrel has shot nothing but lead and still functions fine because I don't use soft lead, only hard cast and clean the gun properly. This is easiest ported system to clean I own or ever owned, and never a problem with lead fowling, just the extra swabbing of the inside of shroud. My Marlin 1894P with about 16 small holes around the end of the barrel is a PIA to clean powder residue out of, but because I use proper type of lead and clean it proper it's never plugged. Sorry to here someone screwed you with a gun that some complete idiot had before you bought the gun.

I hate hearing how someone who is not well informed about a product, be it gun, or a car and then the person has a problem and then the incorrect assumption that all those of that brand are crap. The DW is easily far better quality in material and workmanship then any modern Colt or S&W made (I own both) but because someone with poor ethic's, be it dealer or previous owner, lied to a person without the proper knowledge to see a problem car or gun.

Waldo, I had a .44 barrel that had holes drilled all the way around it. The shroud only had 2 ports milled in it, on top, on either side of the rib. They did this, so when you changed barrels, no matter where the barrel stopped when you set the distance with a feeler gauge on the front of the cylinder, some holes would be close enough to the top to vent the gas.
I shot plenty of cast bullets out of mine, just took the time to take it apart and clean it.
To bad that the rawhidekid had bad luck out of the one he owned. Kinda like buying a car/truck, not changing the oil or getting a tune up, the engine siezing up at 50,000 miles, and blaming the manufacturer. A little common sense goes along way.

Know what you mean about blaming the wrong people or thing.

Heck I bought a non ported barrel to use when just plinking, bet their hasn't a dozen rounds though the none ported barrel. Just a waste of money on my part.
