Best double action revolver???  HHHHMMMMM..........Popularity  or Quality???    Highest price? You can't pic just one each caliber has its own winner. Its really the one that feels better in your hands.
1. In 357mag the best one is, overall the most bang for our buck I think is the ruger police service/security six in stainless with a 6'' barrel.  But top shelf dollar wise the python so they say.  I've owned both and i still have the ruger.  Don't leave out the S&W N frame m27 & m28's too.
2.  In 44mag we put the S&W M29 vs. Ruger Redhawk.  I believe the ruger would take more punishment plus no screws to come loose.  For braggin rights the S&W M29 but for all weather hunting the redhawk.
3. In 38 special its the S&W K-38 combat masterpiece with its 4'' barrel.(popular with Police)

Dan Wessons, from an engineering and accuracy point.

I'd have to go with the Ruger GP 100. I've had mine for nearly 20 years. Reliable as a hammer, accurate, points well, carries well. All I've ever done to it other than clean it is put on a Hogue grip.

Ruger Redhawk

not with the factory trigger, and not with issue grips.  Colt Python beats every Redhawk, and Super Redhawk, and GP100 and SP101 I own or have fired.

S&W K frame.  Not the strongest, or even the most accurate in "as sold" form

While I think highly of Ruger and Colt products, the Smith & Wesson K frame has served as an issued weapon in the military, was the dominate revolver in the holsters of law enforcement until the rise of the semi-automatic, and was chosen by people in the millions to keep their home and family safe. What better endorsement could there be?

A well tuned Smith is a great side arm, but as issued against an as issued Colt Python it is but a shadow.  The local city police and sherrifs all carried Pythons until the departments switched to semi-autos.

I like my Dan Wesson 15-2VH, with the four interchangable barrels, 2.5", 4", 6", and 8".

Now do I count that as one, or four revolvers?

KORTH!!!!!!

I can't believe no one mentioned Korth. The Korth revolver is cut from one solid billet of steel. All the grain structure running the same direction. The fit and finish is simply amazing....and so is the price!

It was mentioned early one in this thread, however I lead a sheltered life in as I've not only never seen one, I don't think I've ever heard of one before....looks good though...Oh, my opinion, there's no one "best" for everyone....so what, many choices.. :)

To me 'best' includes durability, as in you can't wear it out or break it. That means Ruger, hands down. But I do love my Model 19 and K38.

I've owned the Python and currently own a S&W 27-2 5".  The Colt was very smooth out of the box.  But I'd have to give the edge to the tuned 27.

In 1962 I bought a used S&W N Frame  357, it is a 5 screw pre model numbers, it later became the Model 27.  I got the original box of Winchester 158 gr. shells, there were 12 rounds missing from the box, and a holster made by El Paso Holsters.  No longer have that box of shells, but do have the rest.  This revolver has gone through alot.  Carried for a good part of law enforcement career when all they would issue is 38 sp.  Amongst the rest of my Smiths this one stands out, but also like the K & even the little J frames.  My only preference is with the N & K frames mine are all 5 screw pre model numbers, the workmanship is first rate.

The best revolver of all time?

How about the Colt Cobra .38 spl. that Jack Ruby used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald, long ago, in Dallas?   8)

I must redo my statement. In the .38 Spl/ .357 S&W Magnum I will go with the S&W 686+. In the .44 Spl/.44 Remington Magnum I select the Ruger Redhawk/Super Redhawk.

So I have thought on this and many of your replys.
I have come to the conclusion that there really is not a BEST double action revolver.
There are many good ones.
I have a wide collection double action revolvers from I and J frames to N frames and a few inbetween.
Many are good but none are best for every job.
The Dan Wesson Pistol pack comes closest with the ability to presto chango go frm an 8" target model to a 2" concealed cary gun that is a little too big for pocket carry.  But the Dan Wesson has a flaw the gun heats up and locks the cylinder to the frame and fast shooting and multiple reloads are not possible for some of the games I play.
My 686 Silohuette model is fantastic but it has a 6" barrel and again too long for carry or home protection.
Now I am looking for a M29 or 629 with a firing pin on the hammer in 4" and think it will do 80% of what I want a revolver to do.  I do have a M 29 in 6" but it gets in the way on horse back or sitting in a stand.
