My first deer ever!
« on: December 19, 2009, 02:40:54 AM »
Well i finally got my first deer, its an 8 point buck. Its not huge, but for my first i dont think its to bad
There are much bigger deer where i hunt, but i was tired of waiting (been hunting EVERY weekend since gun season opened)....and i wasnt going to pass up another 8 point (already passed on 3 or 4).

The shot was 166yds. I hit him with a .243 100gr winchester powerpoint, he didnt take a step...he dropped like a sack of hammers! ( i was most proud of my shot).. if you look you can see where i dug the bullet out of his shoulder (it was just under the skin)

Congrads on your first deer!  Now you've done it! You'll be hooked for life and have to get a muzzleoader, a bow, and a new rifle:)  Deer meat isn't as cheap as some people think.  Congrads on  a nice looking buck.  Not bad for a first.

Well i've already aquired a bow...and a new 30/30win...so the disease has set in. I have been trying the past few years (one or two weekends per season), but finally decided to get serious about it.

Next year i am going for one of the big boys that are on the place where i hunt.....

Thanks for all of the kind words so far.

Congrats on a nice deer. Most folks would feel damn lucky to get one like that anytime, much less for their first. Remember it ain't the size of the deer in the hunt, but the size of the hunt in the deer.

Congrats!! And I agree, it's a great trophy for any season!

I consider it a good season when I don't get hurt, everything works, and all come home safely. Bagging an animal is merely icing on the cake - and it's always been that way. I wasn't taught to trophy hunt at home, and never learned. I was taught to hunt, respect game, land, and others, and that it wasn't about "needing to kill something". And I dearly love to hunt, though some years I don't get to go.

Enjoy the hunt and the spoils thereof:

Congrats-
Nice deer! Too many hunters are hunting for antlers, any deer is a trophy in the real world. How goes that saying- "A buck on the ground is worth two in the woods!"

By golly Mirage, I must have missed that in your post. I changed my post above to reflect your thoughts as well as those of Spruce. ;)

Congrats on a very nice buck. The performance with your .243 is the same as I have always had, just not with a buck that nice.   :'( ;)

This has been my best hunting season to date, 3 hogs and 1 deer. I am hoping to bag some more hogs..and with the second season of dove opening soon...maybe some doves.

Thanks!

Hey JWP,

Congratulations on your fine buck there, and looks like your a local fellow to boot. Of course here in Texas that simply means your somewhere within a couple hour drive. LOL Where bouts are you hunting?

I have been hunting nearly 40 years, and believe me any deer you set your sights on is a keeper. Too much now days goes into size. Don't ever let folks talk down to you about a deer, everyone had to start somewhere, and most folks haven't ever gotten one as big as yours. Shoot I have sat out there almost every weekend of some seasons and not even seen a deer.

Like has been mentioned, the hunt isn't about the kill, it has much more to it than that. Keep it up, your on the right track.

Heck I had to look that up, your right they have to pipe sunshine out there I bet. ;D

One thing I miss about hunting out in areas like that other than the people, is the night sky on a clear night. Heck even with no moon you can still see well enough to get around just by the star light.

Nice job on your first deer! Mine was a crotch horn 4 point and one of the bigest bodied deer I have ever shot. I made a bow hanger out of the antlers, and every time I get my bow down I think about that deer. I was with my son this season when he took his first deer/buck. It was a spike horn, but he was happy with his first deer and I couldn't have been more proud of him. It was quartering to him and he put the 308 right in front of the right shoulder and piled that deer where it stood, couldn't have made better shot placement. We kid him that it scored a whole 7 in Boone & Crocket. I wish you continued succses with your deer hunting.
