Paper Shot cup?
« on: October 25, 2003, 12:08:21 PM »
Howdy gang,

There's a thread going about turkey loads and I mentioned that I use a paper shot cup for my load. Does anyone else here use them? I've been using using them fer years and love the extra performance I get get pattern wise with them! Plus they's easy to make and cheap! (cheap being the key word in alla my endevours! :) ) I make them outta those yeller post-it note pad papers, by wrapping them around a piece of large dowel rod, folding one end over and glueing it withe Elmers white glue.

My turkey load is 1 1/2 oz of either 4 or 5 shot in one of my paper shot cups, a 1/2" cushion wad, overpowder wad, and 80 grains of goex 2f. (I've been using Elephant for several years and my load remains the same except that I use 3F in that brand). It will hammer a turkey out to 30 yards purty easy in a cylinder choke barrel. With my full choked Trapper it will darn neart make forty yards but I've never shot a turkey that far out. (my idea of hunting is to get as close as possible to my quarry. I'm not impressed by long range sniping in the hunting field, it's fine for those that can do it, jist not my thing)

I also use the paper tubes for all around shooting, ergo my field loads fer pheasant, etc. But I don't bother with them for skeet and trap shooting in competition. (not that I'm any great shakes at those games! )

I have never used  paper. I have used old 12 gauge hulls with a couple of splits about 1/3 down the hull so the air catches them. They make a nice solid pattern in my double for turkey. I may try making some of those paper ones. Heck , for squirrels and such I dont even bother with a cushion wad most of the time. I just use 2 over powder wads. Squirrels never could tell the difference

Coin wrappers work very well, and they are cheaper than yellow post-it notes, the banks give them away...How's that for cheap??,,  :)

:D  :D  Two weeks ago went over to a friends house for a shootin fun and hunting , well I loaded up my 12 ga black double 75 grains black, standard over owder wad, cuosion wad #4 shot and over shot wad a tree rat goes running across a branch , my friends son opens up with his 870 and is just pumping out the shells, I up and shoot and am rewarded with a falling tree rat , gets over to it and he looks up at me and I looks down at him notice he don't have  red marks, I knocked him out of the tree with a wad and he falls 40 feet to the ground , thems some tough critters there, and runs off. we then shot a little trap, I for got that the my 12 ga's like a little light under what i shoot at after a while I just destoryed the clay pigeons and have since raised havoc on my friends tree rat population.

Geez Cuts sounds like you need to find a new bank. LOL All of our banks around here give you the wrappers for coins. And they give them out by the hand full.

I'm not much into shotgun muzzleloading. More because of the shotgun I have. It hurts my shoulder to shoot it so I don't shoot it.

Mamaflinter,

Yeah! Don' give up on it! They's a bunch of ways to reduce felt recoil! Wat kinda scattergun ya got?

My Trapper is so light that it kicked the bejeezuz outta me! I put a hole in the butt and added shot fer a "dead mule" which helped a bit, then I put a recoil pad on it and covered it with a leather wrap to keep it lookin authentic. Now it's purty nice ta shoot....'cept wif my hotter turkey loads!

The dime wrappers I have aren't a perfect fit with the full choke!  When I make a paper shot cup (I use a combination of 3" computer lables with a wax paper liner) and full choke, I have to push the paper shot cup into the bore empty, and then fill it with shot to get past the choke.  Seems to work for me.

Mama flinter... I can feel yer pain   A lot of the earlier ones were made real light. I have a old Navy Arms double 12 that only weighs about 6lbs !  With no recoil pad added or weight even with 75 gr powder / shot
it  would put some nice black and blue designs in my shoulder only after a couple of shots. The first goose load I shot out of it kicked so hard I thought I messed up the powder charge somehow.   SO I Loaded er up again and fired another round ...... powder charge was right... debated on getting my shoulder xrayed for 3 or 4 days  :)  until the swelling went down.  I have worked on it to make the recoil at least managable and still do not like to shoot heavy loads through it and that would only be for turkey. All the places I hunt geese are steel only now so I just use My rem 870 for them. If I were to buy one now I would get a heavy 10 bore or If 12 bore I would make sure the weight was there.

crow feather Need a new shoulder huh? More like all new body parts.

My shotgun is the now discontinued T/C Tree Hawk 12 gauge. This particular one sports a synthetic stock (painted in Mossy Oak). It's not real light, but when we were shooting skeet with it several years ago, it hurt me. So I've never shot it since.

Mama,

Any body that loves the black the way you do - it is a shame that they can't participate in one part of the sport or ta other.  I pray that you find a way.

I understand those new fangled in line shot guns not only got seven different ways to reduce recoil, but they also have a tape recording that says "sorry bout that" if you moan after the shot.

Ok Mamaflinter, ya a synthe stock! Now we're gittin sumwhere! Should be a fairly easy job to drill the butt or remove the plate to get at a cavity already there, add shot to it so as to give it a bit more heft to soak up recoil. That's a simple fix! If it don' help it's time to look at length of pull and proper fit, and with the synthe stock it can be altered with fiber glass .  'nuther place to look is at the angle of the butt plate, some gunz kick like the bejeezuz on accounta they's transferin' recoil to yer bonez in the wrong direction! Have a smith who unnerstands scattergunnin' take a look at the gun and you together, I'll bet he can make adjustments that will make that thing a whole bunch easier on ya!

A poor fittin scattergun is like a poor fittin spouse!!! Nuthin but misery! But one that is properly fit is a joy to be with...forever!

Crow feather Now wait a minute. WHO said my shotgun was an inline? I didn't! It's a percussion sidelock. It's based on the New Englander model.

Cuts I'll try your suggestion (or have hubby alter it. Hmmmmmmmm that last statement that I quoted is true enough for sure.

Mama,

I meant that there is one of those shotguns available if nothing else works for you.  I didn't mean that I thought you had one.

Be sure that you seal that hole in the butt of the stock real well - otherwise you will be the first person to pull the trigger and have shot flying out in opposite directions. :)
