Kelso man shoots suspected prowler with bow and arrowBy The Daily News
December 14, 2009A Kelso bowhunter used his compound bow to shoot a suspected prowler in the buttocks late Sunday night, police said.
Officers responding to the 1100 block of North 10th Avenue at 11:45 p.m. learned that Scott Allen Schwingdorf, 32, interrupted a possible burglary in progress to a nearby vacant residence, according to a KPD news release.
Schwingdorf did not return a reporter's request Monday for an interview.
Charges against both men are possible, and the case will be reviewed by the Cowlitz Prosecuting Attorney's Office, said Kelso Police Capt. Vern Thompson.
According to police, Schwingdorf armed himself with his hunting bow and a broadhead arrow, chased the man to Cliff's Hilltop Market, about 3 1/2 blocks away. The man refused to stop, and Schwingdorf shot him with the arrow.
Police said Galen Louis Crayne, 32, of Longview later sought medical attention at St. John Medical Center for an arrow wound to his left buttock. Crayne underwent surgery at the hospital Monday morning to remove the sharp-bladed broadhead tip, and his injuries were not life-threatening, Thompson said. The hospital listed him in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon.
No one had been arrested in the case and there was no hold on Crayne Monday morning, Thompson said, but the investigation is continuing.
Early Monday morning, police located and impounded the vehicle the wounded Crayne allegedly left the area in. The vehicle's owner, a Longview man, later called police asking why his vehicle was towed. Police said he told them he picked up Crayne in Kelso and dropped him off in Longview. Crayne could face burglary charges. Schwingdorf could face assault charges depending on whether the circumstances justified his use of a bow and arrow, Thompson said.
