Any you guys in that big snow.
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:29:40 PM »
Any of you guys stuck in that big snow in the DC area?  They are talking this is the biggest storm since 1992.  I was there for that one.  The whole city was paralyzed.  Ambulances and fire trucks could not even get around.  Blizzard hit on a Friday night, and stalled everything.

My daughter is in the midst of it.  She is expecting 18" or more, and the snow so far is dry and powdery.  Blows about and such.

Wonder what happened to global warming?  Must not have affected the east coast yet.

Here in WINCHESTER VA, about 80 miles west of DC we have about 15" but it is starting to lighting up.
Not real wet but not light fluffy either.
My wife's sister called this evening from on top of a mountain  about 12 miles closer to DC and they have a tad over 24".
Same goes for my uncle in CHARLOTTESVILLE VA, about 80 miles south east of here.
24" and it has stopped there.

I was just talking to my Mom in Nashville Tennessee, she said they are expecting snow tonight.  If there is a hint of snow they will not go outside till it's all gone.  I remember when I was a kid, when it snowed Mom locked the doors and turned on the TV.  We were not allowed outside till it was all gone.

Pittsburgh only got about 3'' or so. I live 50 miles SE of Pittsburgh in Scottdale Pa and we got pretty close to 8" and they say we will get about another inch tonight. This is the first snow fall to speak of this year though. We have only had an inch here or there until now. Dale

Yup. The roads are real bad even with 4 wheel drive. Most of the roads have not even been touched. Why I have no idea. It would seem the plow guys took the day off. Dale

Sky and I were watching the news last night.  Our local weatherman again mentioned the Blizzard of 1992 for the east coast.  I mentioned how we made a hospital run right in the middle of it.  Michelle said she does not remember it.

Sky got loud and started saying how that was his worst memory, and also his first memory from his childhood.  He was two months shy of being 4.  He reached up in the cabinet and took down a Pyrex bowl, telling Michelle how he remembered me putting crushed ice in that bowl and shoving his foot in it.  Then driving to the Hospital at Andrews, AFB.  Michelle still does not remember it.  Skyler and I remember it well.

Blizzard hit on a Friday night.  We had only been living there about a month, having just moved from Anchorage Alaska.  Michelle called Sky and I down for breakfast.  We were all in our PJs, and I was setting the table.  Sky wanted to help, so he was moving the stools into place around the table.  (With a three yr old we did not use the carpeted dinning rm)  One of the stools fell over, right on sky's toe.  Blood flew and the child screamed.  His toe was a mess, and I knew he needed to go to the emergency room.  The nearest one I knew of was at Andrews AFB, just north of Waldorf where we lived.  Michelle and I got dressed and off we went with Sky's foot in a bowl of ice.

When I backed out of the garage I never gave it a thought about the snow.  That was a normal occurance with me having lived in Alaska for so long.  I was driving a Ford Aerostar van with 4-wheel drive.  As we left Waldorf going up 101 I realized there were no tracks on the highway.  Oh well did not bother me.  When I got to Andrews, the guard came out telling me the base was closed.  No one was allowed to be driving on base.  I informed him I needed to get to the Emergency Room.  The guard pointed to the hospital and said good luck getting there.  I drove to the hospital.

When we got to the hospital emergency room I had to dig out the door to get inside.  When we got inside people were lying everywhere.  On the sofas, the chairs, and on the floor.  People started cheering saying the plows had gotten through.  They were real disappointed when I told them no plows just me.  I had to go looking for a nurse and doctor.  They were locked away in examining rooms and offices.  Had a hard time convincing a nurse that we had just arrived.  Finally she got a Doctor, and a couple of Techs, together to take care of Sky.

When the storm reached a certain point the night before the Base Commander had closed the base, and refused to let anyone on or off.  All those people were stranded at the Hospital, along with a good portion of the Staff that was due to go home.  Then it reached a point where Security Police could not get around.  All they had were cars and two wheel drive trucks, all with highway tires and no snow chains anywhere on base.

When the Doctor had finished with Sky, and given him a pain killing shot, he told me to go find a space for my family to wait till the roads were plowed.  I quietly led Michelle out into the hallway, down a quite corridor to a back door.  We went outside and got into the van.  As I approached the gate the guard was facing towards the road.  As I went by the guard shack the guard saw me going out and started yelling and ran outside, but I was already past and headed for the highway.  As we headed south on 101 I saw a Roy Rogers Chicken place open.  We stopped to get something to eat, since we had not eaten before leaving home.  The employees had been stranded the night before and could not get home.  Four teens lived in Waldorf, and asked me for a ride to the Shopping center there.  They said they lived close enough to walk from there.  They prepared us something to eat, and we took them with us when we left.  I drove each one to their driveways, then went on home.

It was Sunday evening before they got the highways plowed, and two more days before they got our street plowed.  We were called and told not to come to work till Wednesday.  Then it was only mission essential personnel for the rest of the week.  I had to go to work, Michelle got to stay home.

The blizzard was '93 not '92. I had 20" outside my garage so couldn't even get my car out not that it would have mattered. It was almost a week until the cul-de-sac I lived on was open to car travel again. A neighbor with a GMC 4x4 pick up with monster tires on it was the first out and we had to dig him out and then push him up the street for the most part so he could bust a way for the rest of us. That was about three or four days after the snow and it took several more days before cars could get out.

I was living in the house we used for the GBO Home Page when we first set up the site. On the 2x4 railing on our front porch the snow was 13" deep. That's in Alabama.

When we get 20 inches of snow in my part of the country nobody even mentions it except that the weather guys tell us to expect delays getting to work. That's no exaggeration. I've driven to work when we had 24 inches one day and 16 the next.

We got it up here in Vermont.  Not much snow at all, in fact none from this blizzard.  It only went  below zero and stayed there for a few days. Our political lemmings paid off Al Gore, evidently, and he saved us from all of that.  The guys down there in the DC area just haven't been contributing to Ol' Al enough.  Global warming (or as the lying libtards like to now call it "climate change") is a crock.  This winter is shaping up a lot like the winters I remember back in the 1950's.  Al's not God, even though he has half the world fooled and thinks he is.

Clarksburg, WV.  20"+.  Outlying areas had over 24".  This is quite a large snow for December.

Got hung up in it in Beckley WV when they closed the turnpike. Could not find a room, but were able to find an all night gas station. We were able to get anything we needed. The girls had a good time of it "camping in the car"!

The local radio station said there was 17" in Mt Airy, NC, quite a bit for this area.

Questor, I notice that your profile indicates that your part of the country is Sansabelt, Bermuda.   Yet, you speak of 20 inch snowstorms, and your post describes how it is in my part of Vermont on lots of winter days. I guess I need to change my mind about Bermuda as a land of sunny beaches and palm trees.  Didn't know you guys got snow like that in Bermuda.

We got about 18 inches in Hanover, South of DC thank God...

Our farm is right on the NC Border and we got about 24" there.
It wasn't much of a problem for me to get around in but these flatlanders are always in a hurry. As usual, a lot of them in the ditches.

Zeus loved it ;D
