Reloading for the 45-70 Ultra
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:50:38 PM »
I've noticed there is a lot of data out there for the 45-70 gov. They list loads for the old trap door models, lever guns and strong actions like the Ruger #1. In your oppinion where does the handi rifle fit?

It will handle them all but may not be able to.  I shoot trapdoor loads in mine.

I've got some Buffalo Bore that I keep back just to "surprise" people with...like my little brother.  Myself, I hand load to about 1750fps with 405 gr.  That's my personal "max" not the guns.

This was just asked about the BC, same action, same loads apply, I shoot the Barnes 300gr TSX-FB using Barnes Ruger data in my SS Ultra Hunter 45-70.

Thanks again for the responses, I think I'll go with the loads somewhere between lever guns and the ruger #1. Tom

I am running similar loads to Tim.  I also have used VV N133 but H4198 looks to work a bit better in the hotter loads.  This load with the Barnes bullet made short work of a 300 lb Black Bear I bagged this past fall.  My son also took a small doe with it as well.  My son is 15 and 135lbs and is a budding recoil junky...so he likes it...

Are these 100 yard shots? That is some mighty fine loads (and shooting) from such a powerhouse round.

Yes, I do all my load work at 100yds.  H&R 45-70s are typically among the most accurate of all H&R chamberings.  ;)

Thanks,

Tim

I like IMR 4198 and RL7 for my loads. I prefer the 400gr bullets for all. I keep the Hand Is to about 1600 fps and the Marlin and my Browning at about 1900 fps.

As stated, the handi will handle the stuff loads easily, but your shoulder may not!!
