Model 24 SxS, vintage? value?
« on: December 19, 2009, 07:50:48 PM »
I have a 24 in pretty nice condition. The story of it was that it set inside a safe for about 50 years. I bought it about 20 years ago at a gun show. I recall finding many 24s but most were badly worn. Any guess as to what this is worth now?  When were these produced? I think these were built until WW2, not sure.

P.A.,

According to Chuckles Hawks, the Model 24, "went into production in 1939 and stayed in the line until 1958." Chuck further comments that, "It was reasonably successful in the market place and a total of over 116,200 were manufactured." Hey, that's not many - should add value to yours. Here's a link to Chuckles' document. The prices on the Model 24 seem to be all over the board. The wife packed my blue book of gun values away, so I can't find a value from that source, sorry. However, following is a few comparables that you might want to look at. My guesstimate is that if yours is in excellent condition, it should be worth at the very least $800 and upwards of $1000 depending on how bad someone wanted one and how badly you wanted to sell it. Just a guess though.

Wow! Great links.   Thanx

I wonder if it would be safe to ream a 24 for 3 inch? It would make it a bit more useful. I ended up getting a savage-stevens SxS 3 inch for the reach I needed, brutal recoil. I'd go home with a bruise from my knee to my ear.

I've seen a few for sale locally most all in really fine condition apparently used little. Most have been priced at $500 or less, never seen one priced much higher. They generally set on the shelf a LOOONG time even at that price around here. Not sure why they just don't seem to be in demand here.
